Carolina's S- rk 1 -u 4- 1 -M . gew UlllV H By Bill McSorley Oamacock Staff Writer Most people have the preconceived notion that rugby is not a sport, but rather an excuse for a Duncn 01 macno guys to see who can maim the opposition. However, ask those same people after they have watched a game or two and they'll tell you that rugby has the excitement of football and soccer rolled into one. Unfortunately, the USC Rugby Club hasn't had the opportunity to show many fans why the sport is so popular throughout the world. A 1 Al .1 wrs+s** Ajmougn ust compiled an excellent 9-3 record last spring, "the turnout was so poor that every game seemed like an away game," said player A1 Catlett. Rich Trauger, assistant captain, has been playing for the club the past four years and extends an invitation to everyone to come out and watch. "We play two 40-minute halves with constant running. To have people cheering for the team just makes the game that much more fun," Trauger said. "In this game the ball is always in motion and the clock never stops unless a nlflv^r is ininrnH AP - , J ? ? ?J? team scores. It's a fluid game, not at all like football where they huddle after every play." Trauger knows there are many students who would like to play rugby, but hold back because they don't know the rules of the game. "That shouldn't stop anybody though, because none of us knew the rules when we started playing," Trauger said. "Size is not as important as many peoDle think. Agility and speed are the | most important factors." I The main goal of the club is that j anyone who comes out to the J practices will have the opportunity | vw vrviji ween tinu icani uie game from some knowledgeable people. Head coach Jean Pierre Chambis, a former member of France's National Team, is a most respected teacher of the camp's intricacies. The club fields two teams and both play each week. There is the "B" team for the less experienced players and an "A" squad made up of the veteran members. The atmosphere is totally relaxed except for game time. "It's almost like a fraternity here," Trauger added. "The guys are all real close and we have a good time at practice yet we still work hard. No one gets paid any money; we just play for the fun of it." The players don't receive any scholarships or financial aid. Coach Chambis owns a business, but coaches the players out of his love for the game. All expenses, <snr?h no "* ??? vii wo ii ipo iu aw ay games, art; furnished by the players. The team has traveled as far as St. Louis and Galveston, Texas to play in invitational tournaments. There are games every Sunday and all home games start at 1 p.m. rugby club 3cognition on Field "B." The first home game is September 17 against last year's state champs, the Greenville Rugby Club. However the team is very confident. Trauger says "they (Greenville) are on their way down while we should be even better than last year with almost all of our key men returning plus some new guys who have already developed into good players."
