LillVC l* ^ TV 111 llliail Sampler it offers some surprises, both good and bad. Side one opens with the title track, "Nightwatch," which sounds like Kenny Loggins a la Gino Vannelli. Surprisingly enough the result is very pleasing to the ear. The mixture of reverbed vocals, synthesizers, dynamite saxaphone and lead guitar, and various percussive instruments blend into a haunting, mellow tune that is probably the strongest cut on the album. So much for a good start. The remainder of side one is a total letdown. "Easy Driver" is a mediocre rocker that is only saved from total oblivion by some fair lead guitar work. "Down'n'Dirty" provides the token blues cut for the album with a heavy bass line, battling lead guitar and blues harp, and vocals that go from throaty Dave Mason-style bass to stingy falsettos and nothing in between. The final cut on side one is a remake of Joe South's moldy goldy "Down in the Boondocks," and from the way it sounds it should have been left in the boondocks on campus (/v'hertb *>or 7<resi^V 1 AMO/t I s<>rr)mt r- I % ;: fa, 51 \m\ b & , mi ?E5 ? l=p:i ? gjj. An attempt to update the song by giving it a cajun-Dr. John flavor only results in a waste of good vinyl. "In an overview, Nightwatch is not bad; its major problem being a lack of continuity." Side two opens with "Whenever I Call You 'Friend'," co-written with Melissa Manchester. The song begins with some boring Beach Boys-type harmonies and continues to be boring through the first two verses. The song becomes much more interesting after this point as the music takes on a light, bouncy tempo and you suddenly realize that the female voice you are hearing alongside of Kenny's belongs to Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. Overall it is a good song with Top Forty possibilities, but 5 ppps&> > <n.*\ /4tfr/4'rwr X' n HMJE \MOfK TlV- * Y- CWAMT \ ~>>/.^ iartjcit* i\'(r . > fCA"^ 5. <2cL ' ?ii After . l-'?<x sura ? siiiM fi'l Ei ill, ^B = (P SOUTHERN WO] To Talk With. The last two cuts of the album are more of what one would expect from Kenny Loggins. "Somebody Knows" is a hard driving rocker whose guitar work borders on heavy metal and is only held back from being so by Brian Mann's piano work. The final cut, "Angelique," could be called melodramatic, if a song can be melodramatic. Probably ranked just below the title cut for best cut on the album, "Angelique" jumps back and forth between light, moody flutes, bells and accordian to heavy, brass sections. The song is highlighted by an excellent Spanish guitar stanza. In an overview "Nightwatch" is not bad; its major problem being a lack of continuity.
