Expert warn By Rita D. Ford Qamscock St?H Writer Tornados can occur at any time of the year, and when they do, their effects are usually devastating. According to Bill Kercheuskv of the National Weather Service, peak tornato season has passed, but there is no guarantee against one occurring. "February through May is the peak season," said Kercheusky. "The frequency is higher during those months, so that's when they generally occur. But they could come about any time of the year ? and have." Festivities over Spoleto 'grea By Alexis Lipsitz Gamecock Staff Writer Now that the Spoleto festival is over for another year and the crowds have gone, many persons are left with uncertain job futures for the rest of the summer. Many of these persons are students, and practically none of uiciii ic^icu) ins snon-term employment with Spoleto. Hilton Casten is one of the many USC students who worked with the festival, and she said she considers it "a great learning experience, and fun, too." "To be directly involved in such a major undertaking, as brief as it was, was a stroke of good luck," she said. "Just to be working with so many professionals in the arts was worth a summer to me." CASTEN, a junior majoring in media arts, held the official title of assistant to the director of country and folk music. "It sounds a lot more pompous than it actually was," she said. "Actually all I did was make sure the singers got to the concert and see that their needs were met." According to Casten, most of the companies traveled to Charleston Ufith thoir num mne<ntnn? Kercheusky advised moving to the lowest level and getting under something sturdy when a tornado begins to approach. He said people for student concerned with the traditional high arts." Casten said she did not feel prices at Spoleto were too high. "No, then it would involve a different crowd," she said. "Not that snobbery's involved; I just think the Spoleto people want to maintain a certain level of excellence and with high prices they can bring in the best performers." CASTEN DID say, however, that a student discount might be worthwhile. "Again, more young people need to be involved in a project of this quality," she said. Not all Casten's experiences were strictly learning ones. "There was always activity, and it was terrific fun," she said. "Next year I want to branch out into another field. The more experience you have, the better position you'll get." ON II I - 11 :UU A.M.
