Award reci university's By John Kozma Gamecock Staff Writer Tenure and promotion of professors at USC bear little relation to teaching ability or service to the Columbia community, according to a USO professor. Dr. Philip Zeltner, recipient of an Amoco Outstanding Teaching Award, credited his accessibility to students outside the classroom and contributions to education outside the university with his winning the cj wai u. Zeltner said he was pleased with the honor, but added that the efforts of many of his colleagues continue to go unrecognized. Selecting a best teacher, he said, is like selecting a "first among equals." ZELTNER, AN assistant professor of philosophy on the Columbia campus, said he is more concerned with failures of ther university in serving the community than promotion, tenure and other professorial recognitions. To that end, he initiated a class in the philosophy of sports last semester. Sports and athletics have ascended to an important role in our society, he said, and to offer such a class at night or on weekends when it would be more accessible to amateur athletes would be well in keeping with the role of service to the community. The community service aspects of the university have improved immensely under the administration of President Holderman, Zeltner said, adding that much of the criticism of Holderman's programs and policies is to be expected. "When you take a stand on anything, U I A j uu ic uuuuu iu mase some enemies," he said. ZELTNER HIMSELF, especially in connection with the teaching award, is something of a controversial figure. miUTftRV RGfiT-ftLto ""Tents" " Refrigerators 2 CU. ft. $8 ner mo Columbia 1201 Percival Rd. 782-4590 The GAMECOCK is the student newspaper of the University of South Carolina and is published twice weakly on Monday and Thursday during the fall and spring semesters and once weakly on Thursday during both summer terms with tha exceptions of four times in August and on University of South Carolina holidays and txamination periods. c Opinions expressed in The Gamecock re those of the editors and not those of the University of South Carolina.
