Biology professor By Brian Duncan Gamscocfc Staff Writer For the third time in less than a year, the USC Flying Club has experienced an accident involving one of its aircraft. Dr. David Husband, 38, a USC biology professor and licensed pilot, crashed shortly after takeoff late Monday afternoon at Owens Field, according to airport spokesmen. Husband, who has yet to regain consciousness, was taken off the critical list Tuesday afternoon at Richland Memorial Hospital where he is being treated, but his condition remains serious, hospital officials said. A MEMBER of the USC Flying Club, Husband was soloing in a 1971 single-engine Cessna 150 when the crash occurred, club president Jeff McKeever said. The plane was equipped last October with an engine which had less than 300 air hours logged in, McKeever said. The extent of the damage in Husband's crash was so great, he added, that the plane will be written off as a complete loss. Owens Field is an "uncontrolled airport," meaning it lacks certain facilities such as a control tower or radar system. ' >?. i i M'?l airplane crash MCKEEVER emphasized the club follows strict guidelines set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration, and has even more stringent rules of its own. An example of additional safety programs, according to the club president, is the Third Annual Pilot Safety Seminar which features airline pilots and FAA officials speaking on new and existing safety measures. USC attended this seminar last March. The FAA is investigating the crash, but details will not be made public for a "matter of months," according to FAA spokesman Frank Kelley. He said the FAA investigation involves four major areas: two dealing with certification and airworthiness of pilot and plane, and two concerned with possible FAA regulation violations and facility malfunctions.
