Nader cited several examples of corporate exploitation, including such companies as Ford Motor Co., Allied Chemical Corp., Consolidated Edison utility company and made repeated remarks about the Exxon Corporation's thievery i)i me American pumic. ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINANTS were one of the main topics of Nader's talk, including the spill of the chemical kepone into the James river and the Delaware Bay. It was "a example of cruelty," according to Nader. The Kepone was dumped into the river [tPmil'CP NaHpr caiH if iwac oaeior ? uwivif II HMO VUOIVI and cheaper than any other process of disposal. The executives in the Allied corporation did not go to jail for the act, according to the consumer advocate, but the company was fined $5 million, a "small amount" to the industrial company, considering its size, assets and damage "for poisoning an ecosystem," he said. He also cited Ford Motor Company's cheating on air pollution regulations which cost the company $7 million in fines, but the company profits average millions of dollars a day. The lake will require 500 years to naturally recover from the pollution, Nader said. The company has paid no damaees. but will have to open a landfill pit for future dumping. Nader called the pollution of the environment a form of "silent violence" and said, "we must meet this abstract form of environmental violence." Chemicals, he said, do not provoke immediate "pain or anguish," do not affect the senses and are not "physiologically antagonistic," but people are exposed to con larninants against their will in food and water. Arguments against the cleaning of the environment by the large corporations say that the technology is not good enough to do the work and that the pollution has not been proven to be bad.
