imagine waking up, opening
your eyes to find several dozen
Burmese people staring at you,
wondering who you are and what
you're doing in their land. If you
are Larry Manter, you quickly
grab your camera and catch the
expressions of awe, curiosity, and
disbelief.
Several months later you find
yourself riding along with 400

day trip across the sweltering 120degree
deserts in Sudan. Again,
Manter put his Minolta into action.
Now imagine sitting in the
Russell House Theatre on a Friday
afternoon and being swept away to
Europe, Russia, Japan, Taiwan,
India, the Middle East, and Africa.

photojournalism is an experienced
backpacker, photographer, and
veteran of three trips through
Europe and one which took him
through 37 countries. He and Kevin
O'Regan, both graduates of SUNY Geneseo,
embarked on their
sojourn in September of 1976, and
were on hand Friday afternoon to
relay their adventures to the USC
community.

parts. The first concentrated on the
European segment of the trip.
Manter and O'Regan arrived in
Luxembourg, then headed south to
Spain, where they spent several
weeks before embarking on a twomonth
rail pass which they took
through 12 countries.
According to Manter, "By
sleeping in trains and youth hostels
we were able to maintain a $5.00
per day budget. Food expenses
were kept to a minimum by
patronizing local markets and by
sticking to a mostly bread, cheese,
and fruit diet."

Two weeks in the Soviet Union,
highlighted by visits to Moscow
and Leningrad, and a six-day ride
on the famed Trans-Siberian
Express brought the adventurers
to Japan by Christmas. The
holidays were well spent with the
gracious Japanese, whose
hospitality made a potentially
confusing country most interesting.
Traveling further into the Orient,
they flew on to Hong Kong and
Singapore, and several weeks up
the Malaysian peninsula brought
them to upper Thailand. Visits to
several hillside villages provided a
refreshing change to the pollution
and noise of crowded Bangkok. The
slides of the villagers were quite
beautiful, revealing often sad, but
always close-knit family
situations.
Continuing westward, they flew
on to a week in once British Burma,
and onward to India, where
living and traveling are incredibly
cheap. "We found we could live
like kings on just $3.00 a day,"
Manter said.
