Tennis teair By RICH MOHN Gamecock Staff Writer The best word to describe the USC performance in the USCMiami tennis match is awesome. The visiting Hurricanes of Miami hlew intn f!n1iiinWn with n 1A.1 record and a national ranking of 13th, while the Gamecocks were playing for the first time since returning from their extended road trip to Texas. Despite these excellent credentials for both sides, the match was not nearly as close as one might have expected. Carolina experienced very little difficulty in breezing to a 7-2 triumph Thursday. Sport I The USC golf team was barely able to hold off a Clemson surge in the last round of the South Carolina Intercollegiate Golf championship at the Hampton Country Club. The Gamecocks who were ahead by five strokes going into the last round suddenly found themselves one stroke down with only nine holes to play. However, USC regained its composure and came back to beat Clemson by the original five strokes with an 871 total. IN THE INDIVIDUAL competition, Adrian Stills of South Carolina State easily won the event, with Gamecock Dirk Maust taking up a third. These wins included an impressive straight set victory by USC's Chuck Hodgin over Miami's Ail-American John Garaghty at number two, 7-5 and 6-1. USC's Tim Baker improved from a second round77 to a 70 in the final round giving him the fourth spot in the individual category. The Gamecocks placed six players in the top 12 with Steve Liebler, Jim Watson and Evans Goodwin rounding out the Gamecock placers. I thought we would win, but I didn't expect this margin. Miami just doesn't lose too many matches. THE QUESTION NOW is will Carolina go to the NCAA tournament? According to Coach Ron Smarrt this is easier said than done. "To have an excellent chance for a bid, we need to beat Clemson and NC State this week. Clemson is a tough team at home, and they can play with anybody. "NC STATE is undefeated including a win over UNC, so we expect a very tough time when we play them." As to whether Carolina should be nationally ranked as many of the fans feel is due, USC's Barry Gilbert said, "I think that the ratings committee sticks to the established powerhouses when they make their picks. But we ? - ??? ?A 1 i^iuvcu uiai wc ic u great team on the Texas road trip but I'm sure we'll be in the new rankings." The sizzling Gamecocks continue their drive towards an NCAA bid in Clemson today. "If they had had an MVP, George would have been it," said Strong. Thomas won first place in the 100 meters and the 200 meters at clockings of 10.4 and 21.1 respectively, and lone iumned 24 fin incnes to win that event. STRONG SINGLED out USC's Steve Wilson and Francis Mwobobia of Baptist as the other outstanding performers in the meet. Wilson won the high jump at seven feet, took fifth in the long jump, and third in the triple. Mwobobia won the steeplechase and the 5000 meters. Standout field performances abounded for the Gamecocks as freshman Mike Sullivan won the pole vault at a new school record height of 15 feet 5 inches. In the discus throw, Pete Dalton took second at 170 feet 1 inch and Ron Sutherland's 161 feet 5 inches captured third. ROLANDO ADAMS leaped 23 feet 2 inches in the long jump to capture third and 48 feet 1 inch in the triple jump to take second while Vernon Wilson won fourth in that event at 46 feet 1 inch. Freshman football player Steve Gettel heaved the shot 51 feet 2 inches for a second place showing, while Tim Coleman was fifth. "Our kids jumped and threw real well," said Strong. "If we had done anything on the track, it would have been an easy victory." The runners certaily had their moments though. Besides Thomas, Gus Kirkland won the high hurdles at 14.2, A1 Jackson was second in the 100 meters at 10.7 and fourth in the 220 at 22.3, Howard Adams took fifth in the 100 meters, and freshman walk-on Mark Rolhfing won third place in the intermediate hurdles at 54.7 and sixth in the 110 high hurdles. "I WAS REALLY pleased with Rolhfing because no one expected him to get third," said Strong. "We had a lot of the class of the meet," Strong stated. "For instance, George and Steve placed high in so many events. Clemson only won four events, but they've got more depth. They have a lot more people, but I think a period of time will cure that." One thing that did bother Strong was Clemson's added points from simply placing in the distance events while Carolina's only additions there were Jim Carey's fourth and Max Minter's fifth in the 10,000 meters.
