The first I heard of the event was from a poster on campus, urging students to come out to get wasted watching "their" team compete. The poster in mind led me to believe that a team, already completed, was, however, comprised of USC students. I was somewhat ticked to realize that said team had been formed without the knowledge of the general public. Before I continue, let me admit the possibility that I may be completely off-base with my comments, as I realize that I may have missed an advance sign-up, or prior publicity encouraging all students to participate-it's just that I don't think it likely. This would have let everyone know that it was a particular group's activity, to be participated in by members of said group, etc., not open to the entire student body. Now to plug up one potential vein of critical response to my view~I am not anti-Greek. This would be quite foolish, as I was inducted into one of the finest fraternal organizations some four years ago at another college. The fact that I chose not to activate with the USC chapter of my fraternity is irrelevant concerning my overall opinion of USC Greeks, and more particularly, this situation. My complaint is against public misrepresentation, not even against special groups. I CAN APPRECIATE the fact that the team, Greek or not, did go out in competition against other teams, and I assume did their best to actively represent their school. In any event, I think it is sad that there isn't some activity that the majority of the USC student body can participate in together. Election Commission deserves praise To the Editor: I think we would be remiss if we were not one of the first to say the recent Student Government elections at USC were a success. Successful not in terms of who was elected, but rather in terms of the conduct of the elections. For the first time in our memory, excellent preparations were made by a USC Election prtwv,^ i 1?li? < -- - v^iuuiiaaiuu, auu, proDaDiy mosi importantly, training was provided to election day workers. Some of you may remember recent election fiascos at the university when elections were like Murphy's immutable law, "If anything can go wrong, it probably will." This was not true this year. Sure, the USC Election Commission experienced several problems during the course of election day. However, none of the problems were of the extent that students were denied their right to vote, or that the outcome of the election was affected. The groundwork for good student elections that Denise Painter, Gregory Swayne, Kim Fowler, Dennis Way and Bob Nenhierl laid as members of the USC Election Commission should be expanded further by the next student election commission. The students of the University of South Carolina owe a vote of thanks to the USC Election Commission, its staff, and election day workers for an efficient, well-run election that was conducted on a fair and equitable basis to all concerned.
