More than By CHRIS DOYLE Gamecock Staff Writer Most people probably think of transcendental meditation as something that is practiced by people who wear flowers in their hair and chant unintelligible words. However, TM is practiced by businessmen, housewives and college students. More than 2 million 1I1U1UI1 pvupiv 111 1.11c; UllllCU OUilCS have practiced TM since its introduction by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1959. An introductory lecture, sponsored by the USC International Meditation Society, will be offered to USC students by four executive governors of the TM program Wednesday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. in room 302 of Russell House. "THE TM PROGRAM is a very simple, natural technique. You practice it 15 to 20 minutes twice a day," said Mary Maude Darbes, a teacher of TM. "TM causes the mind to reach a more subtle, vague but more powerful level, according to Darbes. "Mental activity is refined. The mind goes inward until it transcends all mental activity," she said. The mind reaches a state of Court condu USC's School of Public Health wil speaking on "The Expert Witness," the Belk Auditorium of the College of McCullough, a USC law profess should prepare themselves when call The presentation is free and open t in Room 63G in the Williams Brice Nu Tfce Godtecocli Want to buy a i 24 k gold Rolls-Royce ??? The first three steps are an introductory lecture, a preparatory lecture and a fiveminute talk with a TM instructor. The following four steps include the instruction of the technique and follow-up meetings to answer any questions, said teacher Colleen Chatterton. The course is taught over a weekend. The course fee is $110 and includes any visits to a TM center alter completing the program. A new advanced course, TMSidhi, will be offered to persons who have been practicing TM for at least six months. Maharishi introduced the Sidhi program on the basis of studies released in 1975. THE STUDIES found when one percent of a city's population was using TM, there were significant decreases in accidents, sickness and crime. With this, the Maharishi announced "the ct discussed 1 present Ralph C. It will enable a person to fulfill any desire he may have and will increase mind-body coordination, she said. jueviiation is a result of mindbody coordination, she said. During TM, the brain waves become more coherent. This enables the mind to experience subtler laws of nature than the law of gravity, according to Chatterton. "When you develop mind-body coordination, the mind can have any intention and the body will obey," said Chatterton. This knowledge has always there, in part, but until the TM technique was introduced, there was no method of developing this knowledge, said Catherine Cole, a teacher of TM. THE OBJECT of TM-Sidhi is to develop universal fulfillment, said PaIO 1 wi^/. 111^ lowers arc simpiy a Dyproduct of this fulfillment, she said. The most important result of TM-Sidhi program is the creation of a better world, Chatterton said. "A nation would become so strong, it would not fear any other nation. . TM differs from other forms of self-development because it is "a totally effortless way for the mind to transcend," Darbes said.
