Total team 4 ' in victory c By MIKE HUNT Asst. Sports Editor f What I saw Monday night in Greenville was quite significant; even more so than Carolina's win over Notre Dame Saturday. Because if Furman had beaten Carolina Monday night, the victory over the Irish would have meant little. It would have been written off by critics as a fluke or just another example of Carolina's erratic play. But Monday night proved the Gamecocks can play basketball. As a team. What made the 76-69 win over iFurman important was the fact that Carolina made it two in a mw vover the Paladins as the Gamecocks are notorious for splitting series play with Furman. To be more specific, Carolina beat a well-coached basketball team at their own fast paced game in a hostile environment. ANYONE FAMILIAR with Memorial Auditorium knows what I'm talking about. Object in the form of paper cups, ice, and verbal abuse are hurled from a balcony of rowdys. The smallness of the arena magnifies the virtues of the home team and the vices of the visitors. It would have been so easy for Carolina to have folded and given up under the pressure of the crowd ana me siicKy rurman man-toman defense after coming off their big win over the Irish. It took poise to quiet the noise of the crowd and the noise made by Furman's big guns, Jonathan Moore and Bruce Grimm. The odds were against USC to once again stifle the scoring of the Furman duo, but again they did. "I'm feeling some bruises," said By Mike Hunt Assistant Sports Editor the 6-9 Moore after the game. "They worked real hard to keep us off the boards. Every time I made a move they cut me off." "CAROLINA," added Grimm, who is averaging nearly 18 points per game, "plays a tough zone rlnfnncn -4 " uvivnov utvauoc mcjr (Jldjf 11 11UII1 the time the game starts. They concentrate." Not only did Carolina concentrate on cutting off Furman's one-two punch of Moore and Grimm with the stingy zone, they showed poise on the offensive end; poise that has grown from maturity. It paid off well. The trio of Jackie Gilloon, Mike Doyle and Kenny Reynolds combined for 46 points as the Paladin defenders were unable to contain the Carolina guards. "They were playing us tight," said Doyle, who led all scorers with 24 points. "To loosen them up we went back door to keep them honest." MORE THAN JUST the contribution of the guards, the win was By CHUCK WRIGHT Gamecock Staff Writer Pete Jordan scored 21 points and dominated the boards at both ends of the floor to lead the Jets to an easy 62-56 win over the Columbia Boys in the intramural game of the week. Jets Mike Hester and playercoach Billy Ponds scored 11 and 10 points respectively as Terry Wood and David Marsh scored nine points each to pace a balanced Columbia Boys attack. "The key to the game was the way our big men played," Ponds said "Th#?v an\ thr? roK/mnHc onrl ? ""VJ C5WV HIV 1 VMV/U11MU UI1U got the ball out to start our fast break. Also, with only six players we worked together real well." THOUGH THE JETS won the game more easily than the final margin of six points would indicate, they started the game eight points behind because of an intramural policy which requires a team to have five players ready to start the game. The penalty is one point per 30 seconds delay. Only three Jets were at the scheduled tip-off time and nearly four minutes had elapsed before a full contingent of five showed up. The Jets quickly tied the score at eight before the Columbia Boys a total team effort. There were no prima donnas. Carolina exhibited a classy form of team ball that no one expected them to show at this point in the season. And that, total team ball, has accounted for a rejuvenated season that may lead to an NIT bid. Carolina has come a long way this year in terms of maturity. Beating a quality team Monday night in a small, noisy gym after excitement of beating Notre Dame in front of 12,000 fans was a formidable obstacle. But the Gamecocks overcame it even in the face of much undeserved controversy that has surrounded the team this year. It took maturity and poise, and those characteristics were personified in the Memorial Auditorium Monday night.
