Boxers show promise By DON ARMSTRONG Gamecock Staff Writer The Carolina Boxing Club showed promise, but not many wins in their match Saturday with East Tennessee State. The Gamecocks showed finesse and style and were close in each match but Mike "Rocky" O'Hare's hard-fought decision was Carolina's only victory. Carolina coach Chris Hitopoulos emphasized the youth and inexperience of his fighters in crediting Ihom uii K Uivti* mui ouuilg iUlUlctllCCS. "Some of these guys were in their second fight so they did a good job to get in there and do what they were supposed 'o do." O'Hare and his opponent David Hunt took turns delivering strong shots to each other's head before O'Hare began to take control. A powerful hook-uppercut-hook combination finished off Hunt in the third round. Bob Welborn started out strong for Carolina with left jabs and freauent comhinaHnns tn him in control for the first half of the three round bout against ETSU's Jim Blevins. Both fighters were hesitant afterwards but Welbom received the brunt of the damage. He came out aggressively in the round, but never really recovered and ended up losing the round and the fight. However, Ford managed to grind out a split decision. USC's Joe Hughey's entertaining though ineffective defensive tactics featuring occasion 1, quick dance-shuffles followed by quicker flurries weren't enough to cover Jim Yates aggressive advances. The match started off slowly due to the University of Tennessee's flu caused absence which resulted in the inclusion of several AAU bouts and one between two Carolina boxers Mike Culbertson and Ron Taylor in which Culbertson prevailed. ETSlTs Frank Singleton was awarded a win in the second round of his fight when USC's Bob Edwards couldn't continue due to a first round elbow injury. ,5S== j' PREPARE FOR: (W HCAT DAT LSAT ERE i GMAT OCAT VAT SAT j - NMBI.I.M, ECTM6*FIEX*VQE NATL DENTAL BOARDS | NURSING BOARDS R*xlM?
