Despite flu U SC stayir By DON FOBES Asst. News Editor Rumors that USC will soon close because of the month-long flu outbreak are just that-rumors. "We have no intention of closing down the school as of now," said Dr. Isao Hirata Jr., director of the Student Health Center. "The only reason we would close the school is if we had to turn back students from the health center. Eight now we have plenty of space available. Plus, the situation as far as staff is concerned is very good. We have four or five doctors available at every clinical session." HIRATA'S SECRETARY said she had been inundated with telephone calls concerning the rumored shutdown, but denied any knowledge or possibility of,; the university closing down. In the five years that Hirata has r been director of the health center, the university has never been shut down because of a widespread illness, he said. He mentioned that two years ago all the infirmary beds were filled with flu victims, Correction Information was inadira?Un?1.. This year's flu epidemic is not as serious as that one, he added. "I think the'A-Texas epidemic here at the university is beginning to grade off a little; at any rate it is getting no worse," he said., _ THE RUSSIAN FLU that was isolated last Friday in Spartanburg County has the doctor worried, however. "The Russian strain is similar to the Texas one. It may make one feel a little sicker perhaps, but so far it it gives indications of being shorter lived than A-Texas." The daily number of students visiting the health center has been close to 300, according to Hirata, who added that all were not flu victims, but the great majority were.
