I New coach Parse about women's I By RONNIE 1IUTCHINS Gamecock Mail Writer In her first year as USC's women's basketball coach, Pam Parsons says she expects the Lady Gamecocks to be able to compete with any of their in state opponents. Due to an increase in the number of scholarships allowed for women's teams this year, Parsons also expects her team to develop into a national contender within the next few years. "I WOULD SAY that we have greater personnel on the team this year," Parsons said. "We've added more scholarship players. Last year there was one girl on scholarship and now, this year, there's eight. That's a big jump. It's almost hard to imagine." Parsons says to compete with the nation's best teams, she hopes the team will eventually be allowed 12 scholarships. "The increase to eight scholarships should make us I more competitive state-wide this year," she said. "But we'll need a couple more years to be on a competitive level nationally." The Lady Gamecocks will be a relatively new team this year with seven freshmen and three transfers. "We'll be a controlled fast-break team. We like to use the motion-type offense as much as possible" --Pam Parsons. The three transfers are Ruthann Burgun, Katrina Anderson and Pam Adams. Bureun transferred from * Old Dominion when Parsons left there last year to take over the Carolina program. Anderson transferred from Anderson College, where she was a Junior College All-America while leading her school to the junior national title. And, in that same tournament, Adams helped her North Greenville Junior College team to a third-place finish. tiik team's f kkminiein are sue snue, jaima Oxley, Dawn Clark, Rita Johnson, Mary Jo Lorelio, Jean Walling and Sue Martin.
