Liquori spoke Thursday light at Callcott College. "The vounjjer people who are getting uway from track and field ure getting away from it because they are looking for opportunities in other sports," Liquori said. "Track and field requires a lot of dedication and the younger people in today's world are dedicating themselves to sports such as football, basketball, and tennis where there is a lot of money in volved. "When I attended Essex Catholic high school in New Jersey I had hopes of playing basketball, but to gel myself ready for basketball I decided to run for the cross country team." Liquori said lhat one day when he was running, the track and field coach noticed him and was interested in his stride and the way he ran. "The track coach asked me if I would line 10 run on a competitive level," Liquori said. "I liked basketball a lot but running was something I could do by myself and not be dependent on other people for support." "Many Americans don't want to run two or three miles a day to get in shape," Liquori said. "The reason such sports as bowling, fishing, and golf are so successful in this country is because they require less physical training than events in track and field." "The Africans are in an environment in which they run to get away from the poverty they are in," Liquori said. "People such as Kip Keino achieve a status and their country supports them totally." Liquori believes that track and field can develop if there is support from corporations. "WE HAVE received help from corporations and if they help sponsor meets and help out competitors, track and field can il: ? grow 111 1111?) luuniijr, hi. .iuiu. "The only thing I don't want to see is the government get involved with track and field. Government involvement in sports lias been hazardous in previous attempts. Though Liquori is no longer running the mile, he is ranked as the number two runner in the 5,000 meter run. Liquori said the reason he abandoned the mile run was because 01 age arm siowmg uuwn u bit.
