sports Tecl Carolina defense effective By MATT WARI) ( amecock Staff Writer Scoring touchdowns may be the most exciting play in football, but keeping your opponent scoreless can be an emotional uplift for a team. "It was a battle of the scrimmage line, and our side was tho stronger of the two," IISC defensive end Scott Blackmail said. "A lot of people haven't really noticed our defense, but after tonight's game I think a lot of eyes have been opened." The Gamecocks recovered four Georgia Tech fumbles and kept the Rambling Wreck deep in their own territory for most of the second half to give USC a 17-0 victory Saturday night. "I'm really proud of the boys on defense," defensive Coach Richard Kaines to fill baseball positions ? & ?a -~-~ Stephen McCormack-USC's dc hands of ( li'sfuml Hell said. "Everybody was helping each other out and with Georgia Tech's wishbone offense, vou need a lot of good pursuit. We were able to get that kind of pursuit from each member on the defensive unit." Georgia Tech had initial success with their running attack, but after two missed field goals the USC defense did not let Georgia Tech inside the Carolina 35-yard line until late in the fourth quarter. Yellowjacket Halfback Eddie Ivery ran along the right sideline for f>9 yards. "We held our composure even after Georgia Tech was able to run 011 US in the hoeinnina of fho o o game," Blackman said. "We didn't get worried or nervous. We knew we could stop th6m, and we eventually did." Bell believed the Gamecocks needed to get penetration from the secondary and the linebackers to shut down Georgia Tech's running game. "Georgia Tech ran well in the beginning of the game because our people were not penetrating and helping out the defensive lineman," Bell said. Althniidh P '1 **a! i n '? uion . "It took a lot of pressure off us knowing that Georgia Tech was deep in their own territory," Blackman said. "We could afford to give away a little bit of ground, but Georgia Tech could not afford to make any mistakes when they were that deep in their territory." Hell believed it was easy to defend Georgia Tech since they are primarily a running team. "We knew all week that Georgia Tech was going to run and that their passing attack was vorv limitoH " Bell said. "This week's game against Miami (Ohio) will be a little different to defend since they use the I-formation and they do pass much more than Georgia Tech.
