Such sayings as "It takes leather balls to play rugby" and "Rugby players eat their dead" can be found on USC rugby coach Jean Pierre Chambas' car. The bumper stickers are all in fun, but Chambas is serious in his dedication to the sport. "Rugby is a very violent sport played by gentle men," Chambas said. "It's a man-to-man sport, with players playing together as a team. The tackle is the key to the game, and only the man with the ball can be tackled." Chambas thinks there are three purposes to the sport of rugby. "First and most important, when someone plays rugDy, he's out there for the fun and sheer ex citement of it. He's out there because he wants to be. Rugby is not a professional sport. It's not a money-making operation." "SECOND. RUGBY is a character building school. A player learns to play for the team Freshman wins tennis tournament Carolina freshman Chuck Hodgin defeated top-seeded Hap Core 7-5,6-7,7-5 Monday to win the Georgia-Carolina upen tennis lournament in Augusta, Ga. Sophomore Peter MacDonald of Springfield, va. and junior Bob Kaplan of Cranfield, N.J. lost in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Barry Gilbert, a freshmen from Oakland, Ca., also lost in the quarter-finals. All-America Chris Mayotte, USC's number one player last year, and Hodgin will play an exhibition match at 2 p.m. Sunday at Scott Tennis Center. Ma'yotte and Hodgin will also play MacDonald and Arthur ^Vnastapoulo in an exhibition doubles match, both events being sponsored by the Kershaw-Camden Recreational Department and the Camden Tennis Association. USC's tennis team started practice Tuesday and will be playing round-robin challenge matches the next two weeks, tennis coach Ron Smarr said. Self-control is the keystone to rugby." In addition to character building, r rugby has other rewards. USC's rugby team has a standing invitation to tour France for two weeks, expenses paid by the French Federation of Rugby. The rugby club was started 10 years ago at USC. Last year's team finished fourth in the state and attended a national tournament in Texas. Prospects for this year look excellent, Chambas said. He expects to return almost all of last year's team but would also like some new players to work with. "Last year's team had a very positive attitude," Chambas said, "and this year should be no dif ferent. We have a very tough schedule, but we should have a good chance against everyone we play. With the right attitude and everybody working together, you can create your own luck." CI1AMBAS SAID many people think there are a lot of injuries in rugby.
