It is her scripting that takes this Jess-thanideal story idea and changes it into one of the funniest films this year. PAUL NEWMAN holds his end of the film up as a coach of a constantly losing ice hockey team. He discovers through a practical joke the appeal and success of goon hockey and uses what he has learned to take his team to the championships. Jerry Houser turns in a good performance as Killer, the goon hockey player who repeatedly plugs transcendental meditation records and who meditates before and after smearing people into the ice. Lindsay Crouse and Jennifer Warren also turn in superb performances as two estranged wives who come to different resolutions on handling their sports-minded husbands. ALMOST EVERYONE connected with sports gets his in this film, from the sports writer who constantly coos, "I was just trying to capture the spirit of the game," to the arena organist whose rendition of "Lady of Spain" wins him a hockey puck in his skull.
