Sports Editor After three weeks of spring football practice, USC's coaching staff is becoming !' familiar with the talent they'll - be depending on in the 1977 season. For most of the coaches, > spring practice is a process of i developing new talent while looking for experienced players to fill in vacant ct<irtinfi t positions. "WE'VE BEEN PLEASED with the effort we've gotten and we keep improving with each practice, so that's what we're looking for," defensive coordinator Richard Bell said Head coach Jim Carlen was . most impressed by the performance of the defense at the M Gamecocks' scrimmage .? The biggest loss for the offense was the graduation of ' tailback Clarence Williams and . fullback Kevin Long. "Our backfield has looked < good so far," offensive backfield coach Dick Rader said. "Of course, with the number of scholarships cut down, we'll have only six running backs. Right now, it looks like Casper carter and Steve Dorsey will be our two top backs. "OUR TWO FASTEST backs are Carter and Spencer Clark," Rader said. "Both of them can run the forty in 4.6." Rader looks at the loss of Williams and Long in a different perspective.
