This year it was Consumer Product Safety, which can encompass any number of areas, Drennon said, "you name it, energy, marijuana, motorcycle safety, or tobacco." DEBATES ARE set up with four D niw iy 00 till ? )1 assembly street phone 252-9301 motto iteteam people participating, two on each team. A debate has eight rounds, with each team taking the negative side four rounds, and then affirmative side four rounds. "The complicated part," team treasurer Rick Barlow said, "is that whoever has the affirmative side can pick their own topic, and the negative side must refute the argument." "You've never done enough research," Drennon said, because debators never know what topic the other team may choose for ! their affirmative argument. 1 At the start of this year, USC's debate team used automobile safety for their affirmative argument. They said cars polluted too much, and needed air baes fnr greater safety. In the second half of the year the team discussed energy, saying solar power was the solution to the energy problem. To organize the research, the team meets every Monday afternoon to divide the work and ana if researcn mai nas oeen clone, Barlow said. THREE CATEGORIES of debate are novice, junior varsity, and varsity. Experience is important in debates, but everyone gets a chance to debate if he puts forth some effort, Drennon said. Annually USC receives about 300 invitations to participate in debates, and of these they will attend seven or eight next year, team member Bob Raven said. When choosing a tournament to attend, the team looks for competitive potential, but expenses are also considered, said Raven. "Travel is the absolute heart of OUT blldeet Drpnnnn caiH O--? Because the debate team receives money from the Student Allocations Commission, it is classified as a club, but they consider themselves a team, Barlow said. Some team members attend workshops sponsored by different schools. Last summer some members attended a three week workshop sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha. TKAJYi coach tticnard stovall decides who will debate together as a team "in whatever combination will do well," said Raven. To debate together, student must get accustomed to each other and anticipate what the other person will say. They must also be careful not to contradict each other, Raven said. Personality also plays an important part in debating with others. The debate team is part of the Forensics Society, and some team members also compete in individual events such as extemporaneous speaking. Although individual records are kept, the team had a good year, Raven said. They expect to do even better in the future because there are four sophomores and a freshman on the varsity team, Drennon said.
