Stressful activities ^ i . ? healthy To the Editor: In regards to the letter written by Mr. Jose Duvall on the "students' perilous activities" which appeared in the April 7 issue of llie Gamecock. T ! _ -1 * * * ' " * i ieei ne nas Diown things way out of proportion. First of all it's only natural for people to seek recreation in an attempt to escape from the reality and pressures of college studies. It is furthermore healthy, as it releases the physiological and psychological stresses that affect the body's functioning. However, stress is one of those things we can't avoid, so we must lf?arn tn 1iv*> with if and attempt to lessen its effects by whatever means will service. Stress is the price we pay for success. As for his perilous activities, I wholeheartedly agree that something must be done about the bottle throwing and cherry bombs, for these are truly dangerous to our health. But, come on, water balloons and egg fights have been around for such a long time and I feel that I'd rather see USC students enjoy themselves this way than running through the Tender Roa - Delicate Turke Tangy Ham Three woys to break the hamburger habit ? without going three different places. Considering these activities harmful and endangering to health is ridiculous. Mr. Duvall must realize that life itself is a risk, however I do agree that after the activity is over, if the area is slick and left unattended, it may pose a threat, but so is walking in the rain, my man. The only activity m nttf - niviiiiuiicu nicti may D6 hazardous to life is egg fights, if you happen to be the embryo inside that shell. If Mr. Duvall feels that he might slip on the substance, I advise him to stay in his room and let stresses of college life build up. Considering he has two more years left I wonder if he'll make it. In conclusion I'd like to say that havinc fun is 0 - ? v.iw put v yjk college life. It refreshes and exercises the mind. After reading Chuck Cromer's article in the April 14th edition, I feel compelled to comment on a point which he seems to have overlooked. Mr. Cromer feels that this university condones alcohol abuse simply because alcohol is made available in unlimited quantities. For Mr. Cromer's information, our society at large makes alcohol available in unlimited quantities. Are liquor store owners responsible when an intoxicated drivpr kills someone with his automobile? Maybe they should be responsible, maybe they shouldn't; that is not the point. If the facts could be *S Break Hamburgef bit at Atbufc f, W. WITH THIS COUPON I Offer Valid thro Sat., | April 30, 1977 | MUmMJMJMJMLHUUl known, there are probably at least as many mature, conscientious users of alcohol in our society as there are alcohol abusers. On this campus I am sure mere are any number of students who judiciously enjoy the privilege of having alcohol available. As usual, however, a few students have given a bad name to the many. Our society also sells guns in unlimited quantities, but just because a few people commit murder with guns, are those who supply guns such as gunsmiths and sporting goods dealers guilty of murder also? 1 think Mr. Cromer would agree that if the involved ctIiHontc nmiN uvuuv 1IVO V.UU1U CACI V-13C & i 1 111 more maturity and judgement in this situation, this problem could be minimized. I say minimized because there will always be the abuser of any privilege. The shouldering of a certain amount of responsibility, however, on the part of the student is always necessary and would appear to go a long way in this case. It is as illogical to blame the university for alcohol abuse as it is to blame the reputable package store owner for someone who drunkenly kills while behind the wheel of a car. It could be argued by people like Mr. Cromer, perhaps, that the whole problem of alcohol abuse stems from its availability, but that in no way 41 " icascus uie responsiDilliy 01 tne person who drinks it. For the past two days, spring's beautiful scents have been ruined for me by the foul odor of poison. The maintenance people or whoever is responsible should realize that insecticides affect the whole environment, not just the insects. What happens to the birds that eat the insects? What about the squirrels that are in constant contact with the ground? I'm sure the beauty of the campus +> can be maintained without this spraying. Why don't we give it a try? Kenneth E.
