Most practitioners of Judo are familiar with this principle, and new students of the sport at USC are learning to adhere to it. The student who resists a superior force will be overcome, but the student who gives way will survive. "Judo is not a sport to learn to break boards," instructor Ronald Charles said. "There is no such thing as a Judo chop." For those who think that a few short lessons will produce "fists of fury," forget it. Judo is a physically demanding activity that requires practice. "Kano combined jiu-jitsu with some of his own techniques and modified others. He established the Kodokan Institute in 1882 to teach his theories," Charles said. "The two schools finally staged 50 matches to determine who was more sKiiitul. The judo school won 48 out of the 50," he said. The other two matches were draws. Judo has spread around the world and can be found in many countries. Charles has taught or practiced the sport in more than 25 nations. But what is the attraction of judo? Charles wanted to master judo because he said he "could throw a guy bigger than myself by using lecnnique, leverage, and balance."
