Timothy Lear By MARK J. LUNDGREN News Editor The date: 2020. The place: the "mini planet" you live in, out in space. The event: a visit to mother earth. The transportation: a space shuttle of NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the "Amtrack of space." Within the next 20 to 25 years, some members of the human race will mierate to space and leave the face of earth. So says Timothy Leary, former leader of the LSD cult and now space-migration advocate. Leary spoke at the Carolina Coliseum Thursday night. IN 20 to 25 years, at le; st half of you will be living in space colonies off the face of the earth," Leary told the audience. These colonies will at first be cylindrically shaped, with a length of about 30 miles and a width of several miles, he said. Each colony or, "mini planet," as Leary said, win contain a numuer ui vaneys wnci c the climate and temperature will be democratically voted upon. Those living in the separate valleys will be the same type of persons, following a policy of voluntary segregation, Leary said. There will be "Miniplanets for bisexual vegetarians," and, "miniplanets for bisexual vegetarians who eat eggs. "I'm not against segregation if it's voluntary. People who share the same vision, the same notion about how they want to educate their children and what kind of ntesiyie. 1 ininK peopie arc mure comfortable with people who share their own vision. "SO I'M NOT against segregation that way, as long as it's voluntary, not economic or based on political coersion. "And as these intelligent miniplanets develop their own uniqueness and individuality they'll communicate in a friendly way. There'll be friendly rivalries between these different realities." I^eary once said that the 1960's were the re John Rivers [Law Student]: ^cHl "I have been in student and government at Clemson, at ( USC and now at the USC Law ? School, and I know the importance of an honest and do- 0 pendable Treasurer. I know of u no person running that can 1J match these qualities of Curt | * * Loftis." CURTLOFTIS . . . " " y tells of outer greatest decade in history, but now says the futu especially those aspects of the future that involve space migration, will be even greater. "Each great step in the past leads to a better step in the future. Each generation should be an improvement on the former generation," Leary said in an interview after his lecture. He said the "davs of the maohn militaristic phase of space exploration are over," and the "function of NASA in space will be like Amtrack," is on earth: to shuttle people to and from desired destinations. HE STATED three ideas whose time has come, he believes. Each idea cannot be accomplished without the other two, he said. The first of these ideas is space migration. The second is "intelligence increase", which Leary explains as not the increase of vocabulary or reading skills but the capability to increase forms of intelligence. The human race is on the threshold of being able to use the mind to create reality and control the body, he said. His third idea is life extension. The life span can now be doubled, Leary said, but this would bring about chaos at the present time. He spoke of the nightmare of older persons, possibly up to 800 years old, imposing their ideas. If the idea of space migration can be accepted, so can the idea of life extension, Leary said. "As I look at my fellow citizens, I think many of them are a thousand years behind time, some are 500 years behind time, some are 100 years behind time, some are 10 years behind time and some are right up to date. Almost everyone until recently has spent all of their life looking backward, never looking farther than the next paycheck or the next election. The whole notion of future thinking is new. The hot item for the future is future thinking," Leary said. "IT'S INTELLIGENT to migrate, and you must be intellieent to migrate. "Evolution df human intelligence and evolution involves migration," he said. "At those moments when a country has enough self-confidence to move is the high point of that civilization." The reason America is more advanced than most other countries, Leary said, is because intelligent persons, persons of "genetic predestination," from the old world were the ones that migrated to the new world. This pattern will be repeated as, initially, Americans migrate to space, Leary said. "In a few decades, the new world up there will be sending back energy and manufactured goods," just as America sends these products back to the older civilizations, Leary said. "We're like slugs pulling ourselves around at the bottom of this swamp (the atmosphere). Planets are clumsy, dangerous places to live, we don't belong on this planet," he said. The "political struggle of the next 40 to 50 years will be who will control space," Leary said, but these questions must not be turned over to the bureaucrats and the industrialists. They must go to the grassroots. THE BUILDING of space colonies will be expensive and the raw materials for construction will come from the moon, Leary said. A NASA spokesman said space colonies are possible, but would involve much further studv. Leary symbolized opposition to space migration in a parable about five caterpillars seeing their first butterfly. The caterpillars symbolize persons not ready for space migration and the butterfly symbolizes the idea of space migration itself and the changes involved. The first caterpillar says he would never go up in a space ship. The second caterpillar says there is nothing in the rules about being able to fly, the butterflies should be brought _ down. The fourth caterpillar, a Buddhist, says why go to the trouble of Dunuing muscies wnen ne can travel witnin his mind? The fifth caterpillar says if God had intended caterpillars to fly, he would have given them wings. "I'm not talking for everybody, I'm just sending out a signal to the 10 per cent who are ready to migrate. "We're going to take the ocean, the topsoil and the earth with us. Those who don't go can learn from our experiences and our mistakes," Leary said. [MDAY morrow! nrmiirniwi
