Energy pla By MICKEY TRIMARCHI Editor-in-Chief An energy conservation plan that would extend Christmas recess to six weeks was approved Tuesday by a student university committee. THE PROPOSAL, approved by the Student Leaders Committee, is subject to approval by the Faculty Senate and final approval by USC President William H. Patterson. Although the Faculty Senate met yesterday, no final decision was reached. In a Feb. 24 memorandum from Provost Keith E. Davis to all university deans outlining the 1977-1978 University calender changes, Davis said, "Our objectives have been to maintain at least 70 class days, to minimize probable energy use, to develop a schedule that has minimum interference with the non-teaching functions of the university and to take into consideration student needs for employment in the ciimmor anH Iho ITlrictmoq hroalr The proposal recommended a fall semester of 71 days from Aug. 25 to Dec. 16 and a spring semester of 71 days from Jan. 19 to May 13. Spring semester was moved one week later into May. The calender provides that seniors take exams at the regulary scheduled time and allows for the majority of senior course exams to be completed prior to the due date for senior grades A finalized commencement schedule was incomplete last week. ALTHOUGH THE proposed calender ommitted Reading Day for each semester, the student committee voted to reinstate both days before the plan was brought. before the Faculty Senat. Wesson said this would not affect the 70class-day minimum requirement. "I was concerned about the removal of the Reading Day," Student Government Vice President Gerald Mosley said. "I think it is a day a lot of students take advantage of for reading." "WE'D FEEL a lot better if students would join in enforcing that day for reading and to make sure the professor doesn't move an exam to Reading Day," Wesson said, The Carolina Community academics code states "No tests may be given during the last two class meetings prior to the regulary scheduled exam period of any semester." This also included Reading Day. Wesson said the restructuring of spring recess was crucial in designing the new calendar. By having spring break coincide with Easter Sunday, Wesson said that it will satisfy most of the vacation needs of students at the university. MANY STUDENTS are away for Good Friday and Easter Monday," Wesson said. "By making this a long weekend, we hope to compensate in some way to put in the days most wanted by people at the university." This would not penalize those classes meeting on Monday, Wednesday and Friday by losing two days. Another plan called for spring break to remain as on week vacation but Wesson said the only other alternative then would be to extend the spring semester to May 20, thus hampering summer employment for many students. "Students are geared to working in midMay and graduates would like to tell their employers when they will begin work on a permanent basis," Wesson said. Vice President of Student Affairs James B. Campbell said a provision will be made so that Veterans will be able to recieve benefits during the extended Christmas break. He said arrangements will also be made for international students and those students whose home are a lone distance from tho university. "I think the energy situation will push other sschools in South Carolina into extending their school year,"Wesson said.
