Police fai To the Editor: This letter is written in regard to an incident that occurred Monday night around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Wheat and Sumter Streets. At that time, my 10-year-old Dodge Polara succumbed to cold weather or some other ailment and stopped dead at the stop sign at this comer. As I was unable to revive it, I opened the hood of my car in hopes that some understanding soul would come to my assistance. To my glee, two campus policemen in a sedan slowly approached, turned their heads to look and siowly drove away. I was dumbfounded. There was no way that they could not have seen me and comprehended that I needed aid as I was standing in the middle of the road frantically waving my hands, screaming obscenities as ? * - I I ] ! 1 At wen as naving my car nooa raisea, me symooi of distress on the road?or so I had thought. With some difficulty I was able to push my car in neutral down the hill into a parking place. Quite upset, I walked to the campus police station and had a verbal battle with a desk sergeant about the hazards that my disabled car had posed to passing cars that (\ ACADEMIC FOKWAKI) PLANNING AMOCO <>i \f I'oter I'opejoy A Mike Griffin V ATHLETIC ADVISORY ^ Mike Sutton y Barry Alford AMOCO OU' ^ Joe McCulloch A CURRICULA & NEW COURSES AMOCO OUT . Instead of an apology, which would have satisfied my anger, the policeman gave me rebuttals as to why they did not need to stop and assist me. They included: 1. The policemen might have been on their way to a "stake out"; 2. The campus police were busy people and with the basketball game that night, they may not have had time to ston (?): 3. Even thouch they should have stopped to investigate because the breakdown had occurred within their jurisdiction (his confession), it was not absolutely necessary because car breakdowns happen all the time. They are a low priority. In essence, my breakdown was a low priority * iL.i 11? i 1: liem mai me uusy campus puiicemeii uiuii i have time to rectify. Well, then what are campus police for? What if I had had someone in the car that needed medical assistance? One girl had stopped and said she had almost run into the "back of my car because she hadn't seen me until she was right on top of my trunk. What about a potential traffic jam? The two policemen that passed me (and make no mistake about it, they saw me) may have been on their way to answer another call for assistance, but if they were they were sure taking their time about getting there. Even if they couldn't stop, why couldn't they had radioed in and have someone else help me? I'm not writing this to accuse all campus policemen of being incompetent and arrogant; just these three. But if more of the campus policemen adhere to the lack of concern, diplomacy, and irresponsibility that these men possess, then USC is indeed an insecure place to study and reside in. I have always thought that the motto of all policemen was to "serve and protect". Maybe this slogan pertains only to professional policemen. ^ CHUCK CROMER mbers mmittees 77 HKALTH SERVICES Diane Sm oak Dave Nichols Sally Vance STUD HOUSING AP1'EA1? If it is done often enough, people, without really having studied the matter, begin to believe it and agree with it. Look at the impact the ,4I FOUND IT" campaign enjoys. The sad part is that a writer for The Gamecock has mastered such a slogan and single handedly repeated it to maybe 10,000 people. Birch Bayh commends you. As to the body of the "Stop State Killing" article, it appears that your esteemed author has chosen to play word games. He (she or it) writes "A definition of deterence must be established. Why? If capital punishment is re-instated and enforced, one of two things will occur: A) people will not commit crimes punishable by death out of fear of death or b) people who insist on playing with their lives and ours too, will no longer be able to play with ours anymore. In those terms, law abiding people will be protected whether criminals choose to be deterred or not. NEIL LAREAU engineering freshman WOMKN'S STUDIES (f CHAKMHTE STIL1, \ Belh Harry ^ John Foster.
