The problem of child abuse in
America was the topic of a lecture
by Margaret O'Shea of The State
newspaper and Lucy Hartley, of
the USC Nursing School, to the
South Carolina Student Nurses
Association of USC.
O'Shea covers health and
welfare as a member of the

Longstreet Theater on Green
Street is also under renovation.
Some modernizations will be
made in the buildings, but there is
an effort to "retain that which is
good from the past," Brunton said.
The buildings are being restored to
their original decor.
"THE HORSESHOE is
something absolutely unique,"
said Bnmton. He said USC is one of
the few universities in the country
that can claim a campus that
existed before 1850. Of the original
buildings, only the president's
house no longer stands.
Brunton said the Horseshoe was
not damaged during the building
on campus in 1930.

specifically about the Timothy
Young case, in which his mother,
Earline Young was convicted of
murdering the two-year-old
Timmy, which she followed closely
and reported in a series of articles.
"In researching the background

"It is much faster, much simpler,
and much cheaper to build a
brand new building han to
renovate," Brunton said. The
buildings had to be ripped apart in
places, anu uegun over again.
Brunton said all the renovated
buildings needed basic essential
improvements such as heating, air
conditioning, and plumbing. The
buildings also had to conform to
fire codes which in some cases
meant adding another entrance.

things like this can happen," she
said. "I was appalled at the
number of people who see it and do
nothing about it."
O'SHEA, mother of two, said, "I
had been one of those people who
would read the stories (about child
abuse) in the paper and say 'that's
an isolated case.' " She later found
that there were 6,000 reported
cases of child abuse in South
Carolina in the last 12 months.
Hartley spoke about the nurses'
role in preventing and treating
child abuse and neglect.
"Child abuse and neglect go
together and it is hard to separate
the two," she said.
She said that 10 per cent of the
