According to C.J. Cambre,
director of operations for the
Thomas Cooper Library, the levels
are heated by specially designed
lights installed in the ceiling. The
lights not only illuminate but also
radiate heat.
"This method of heating has
been used in many other buildings
with success," Cambre said.
"There are basically two factors

involved in the heating process:
one is the lights themselves, and
the other is the patron's body heat.
These two combined should
provide the heat needed."
According to Cambre, the main
cause for the cold on the lower
levels is the imbalance of air in the
building.
"This is a common problem in all
new buildings of this size," he said.
"I DON'T KNOW the cause of it
but the Office of Campus Planning
has been notified and they have
contacted the contractors to see if
reDairs have to be done. It mav iust
be a matter of time until the
system balances out."
"I feel that once the problem
with the imbalance of the air is
overcome the heating of the levels
below ground will be no problem.
Actually, the third and fourth
levels should be the warmest of all
the lower levels in the building
because they have a more complete
insulation," Cambre added.
Because of many windows and
overall lack of complete insulation
on the upper levels conventional

stalled.
The air blower that circulates air
through the entire building
operates all year and is gauged to
keep the building temperature at
74 degrees.
