LUNDGREN ' Gamecock Staff Writer The key to a good university is the individual faculty member and the enthusiasm of the faculty has a direct bearing on quality in the classroom, according to Provosl Keith E. Davis. The way to continue improving the quality of education at the university, is the continuec selection of first rate faculty anc administration members, ac cording to Davis. In order to stimulate faculty ir top teaching form, growtl development of funds is needed foi I research, experimentation workshops, and travel to insure | communication with others in th< j academic field, he said. "PART OF the whole business of keeping up the quality of education is continual review and redesigning of majors, courses, and objectives. This is best done by the faculty and personnel of the individual departments," he said. Davis said that if a faculty member "knows and enjoys" what he or she is teaching, the "tran sferring of what is important" is accomplished much more easily At USC there are many "young faculty members with a strong general desire to improve, and who want to make their mark," Davi? said. "It's a matter of pride in what they do, because you can't pay people enough to do a first class job, it must come from within." Davis said USC is the number one university in the state now. As the university has improved, a need has arisen to find out if courses have really been made more challenging. Davis said a way to measure whether the courses are more challenging is the administration of tests to seniors which compare them nationally with other seniors, Davis said, but the tests are expensive.
