The arts * The college of business administration (BA) is seeking autonomy from the rest of ithe* university. It is interesting that they should request separation to improve their -program, as if the university is holding admissions unduly low. This is in fact the case, but the Board of Trustees has been considering raising ad missions leqiureiiieiiu*. Another interesting reason for the change is control of curriculum. It is assumed that in the course of change, subjects not relevant to business administration will be cut out; but is it so wrong for business administration majors to study southern politics or Shakespeare, rather than business English &nd corporate management? What is being attacked is the concept of a liberal education. There are only 250 English majors in the university, out of more than 20,000 students, because of the poor attitude towards a liberal education. Whvfiaht mm / V? over label on ballot? A businessman needs to know about the riots in South Africa and literature for the sake of knowledge, if not personal growth. Knowledge and ideas are the onlv means hv which this country will save itself from stagnation of purpose and mind. Are we here to glorify God, love each other, survive, enjoy ourselves, leave it better than we found it? Each individual has his or her own answer, but some, those who do not bother to read the ideas of others, have no answers at all. They are the ones who stand to suffer the most?by deprivation of the soul. as human beings, we thrive on the existence of others. We need each other, no matter how isolated we become. Ideas would no doubt continue to be spread underground, but they would be considerably less publicized. All of this is not to say that the BA administration, particularly Dean Kane, has in mind the stagnation of ideas and creativity. No doubt he is trying to facilitate the exchange of information from professor to student. However, the rationale behind autonomy from the university?reducing the amount of liberal arts education in favor of strict business orientation?should be questioned. BA majors should be aware that changes in curriculum could result in fewer chances to take double majors, that is, less study of unorthodox subjects such as southern business methods in the 1900's. Such unorthodox studies are needed to satisfy individual quests for knowledge. Double majors lost popularity when faculty members appointed to such programs tended to be the first to be fired in a budget crises. Should any student be interested in remaining a member of the university, the whole university, questions should be raised to the BA faculty before the new plan is approved in December. Just as Kane said, the plan will serve as a screening device to weed out marginal students who belong elsewhere. BA students should be careful to find out if studying a double major or desiring to take mindbroadening courses, would classify a person as marginally interested in business and therefore unsuitable for admission to the B A college.
