Richards By John Robinson ' Bobby Richardson, University of South Carolina baseball coach, is an unlikely candidate to enter Washington politics, but Gay Suber, Richardson's campaign manager, thinks the time is right for a new kind of politician. "People are in the mood for a fresh look, and not for the politician as usual," Suber said. "Richardson's biggest asset is that he isn't programmed into politics." Richardson is the Republican candidate running against incumbant freshman Ken Holland. D-S C in the 5th Congressional ~ ? ??' O ? District. Both candidates ran uncontested in their respective primaries. "I think Holland's incumbancy is working for me because confidence in government is at a low right now," Richardson said. Although Richardson announced his candidacy May 10, he still has not formulated a platform. "Right now I'm still forming a strategy. I will be going into issues deeper and taking a stand on specific issues later in tne campaign,'' Richardson said. __ | Monday Night Student [ Special C/\ r> $ O 9 9 W/\| n a4 ! i ui *. y v/u vjci.m i U.S. Choice Steak I Baked Potato or Frenc I Salad Bar Reservations Reques I.D. Richardson said government needs common sense rather than political expertise. He said lobbyists and special interest groups have too much influence in the federal government. "When elected I won't have any obligations to fulfill," Richardson said. Richardson will be running in a predominantly Democratic district. "The Republican Party is weaker in that district than any otner pari 01 me siaie, Suber said. "We need a tremendous crossover of voters to win, but I am rCinning a nonpartisan campaign. I hope the man and not party affiliation will be the important factor in the elections," Richardson said. A poll conducted by the National Republican Congressional Committee shows Richardson and Holland tied with 31 per cent of the vote. "What was most encouraging to me," Suber said, "was that Bobby scored higher in the recognition factor than Holland." The percentages were roughly 57 per cent for Richardson and 54 per cent for Holland, a good score for a first term congressman, according to Suber. "Our position is just to sit and see the results of election," Hagan said. He is "not in the position to speculate "who the next coach would be if Richardson does not return, he added. Hagan said he is required by law to advertise and interview applicants for the position with a minimum of 30 days notice before filling the position. Johnny Hunton has been appointed interim coach and is handling scheduling, recruiting and fall baseball which extends from mid-September to mid-October, Hagan said. Richardson said he does not expect to loose the election. "It may come to pass that prior to the election I will separate myself from the University," Richardson said. "If I had resigned when I announced my candidacy, it would have created a lot of confusion for the team because I would not have been allowed to coach in the NCAA play-offs," he said.
