To my horror, and utter amazement, I found that the title was a paraphrase of the first sentence of the article. The thought that such an idea as was being presented was accepted by the author, the editors, and probably a majority of the readers, prompted my writing this letter. The article was entitled, "Cars, noi students, men victims.'' me first sentence read, "The victims of the most thefts on the USC campus. . . were not. students but their automobiles." Such a statement implies that it was the automobile, not the owner, that was wronged by having the hubcaps, antenna, or radio stolen. An automobile cannot be a victim of a crime since it possesses no rights \i/hir?h r?an ho <rinl a tor) CunK naitvu vuii w v t i viu vvu . uuvil erroneous thinking on this matter does nothing to discourage thefts, but rather, encourages them. If someone thinks he is only stealing from an automobile and completely dismisses the owner's property rights from his mind, he can, indeed, easily justify his act. An automobile cannot possibly care that it is one hubcap short, cannot possibly be upset by a missing radio or stereo system. It has nothing to gain or lose. It is only the individual, who has earned nis property, wno nas naa tnat which is rightfully his taken from him without just cause, who can be considered the victim. What ghastly fear and pain it brings to realize that my mind now functions with less accuracy than a rusted sundial in a dark cavern. I feel huge pieces of my astral consciousness break off and drift into the unreality of prison life How true, our friends the sociologists put it "Man is a product of his environment. At times I still think that I may be able to retain my sanity, but who wants to be sane anyway! Let them call me crazy, let them call me insane, because the truth is known to me. Quote, unauote. "The joys of madness are known only to a madman." Help a madman regain touch with the outside world. Take me out of this dark cavern, and bring me into the light of your friendship.
