Sailing Cli hi/ 6oilv ix/iioaii EiJ W7CIIIJ f* IIOVII Whether a person enjoys sipping a martini while basking in the sun on a gleaming deck, or gritting his teeth while racing with a gust at his back, USC's sailing club can be fun. The sailing club, organized in 1964, offers a variety of opportunities for the novice or experienced sailor. While one main function of the club is to teach beginners to sail, it also supports a competitive racing team. n 1 t_ 2 j a. mc!l r ormer ciud presiueni iviiKe Gombola describes racing as a "floating chess game. It's not how fast your boat is," he said. "It depends on positioning, tactics and strategy." THE CLUB OWNS 14 boats docked at the Lake Murray sailing club. Beginners are taught in one of six sunfishes, while experienced sailors use either four 420's (racing boats) or four oensuins. For $10 per semester, qualified members can take out the boats at their leisure. Novice sailors receive this privilege after ? preliminary training.
