Their observations are the topic of a book, Life after Life, by Raymond A. Moody Jr., who spoke at USC Monday. I'm not trying to prove there is life after death," he said. "I realize that it's an anecdotal thine rathpr than a truly scientific thing." He said all he could do is report what other people have told him about their experiences. Moody said about 15 elements appeared to be common and occurred over and over again among me idu persons ne talked to in his research. In his book. Moody combines these elements and draws a composite picture of what it is like to die. "He hears himself pronounced dead by his doctor. He begins to hear an uncomfortable noise and at the same time feels himself moving very rapidly through a long dark tunnel. After this, he suddenly finds himself outside of his own physical body, but still in the immediate physical environment and ?iic own body from a distance, as though a spectator. "He notices that he still has a body, but one of a very different nature and with very different powers from the physical body he has left behind. Others come to meet and to help him. He glimpses the spirits of a kind he has never encountered before-a being of light-appears before him. "This being asks him nonverbally to evaluate his life and helps him along by showing him a panoramic, instantaneous playback of the major events of his life. "At some point he finds himself approaching some sort of barrier or border, apparently representing the limit between earthly life and the next life. Yet he finds he must go back to earth. At this point he resists, for by now he is taken up with his experiences in the afterlife and does not want to return. "Later he tries to tell others, but has trouble doing so. In the first place, he can find no human words adequate to describe these unearthly episodes. The experience affects his life profoundly, especially his Onon II , ? ~ u ^lirnf II It. iJ l^u I IUI IO I \\ J \ccepting : \yr< ^RCH 26, | %g:: Positions: I (Summer) ' * J : CFnin X 1 M (Summer) I I w vM (Fall) | 1 M (full year) || ^ m I d must be 11 iw/ i r\4 Q + i 1 I \ V) i w i MiMwunij, ii P-m- 11 Richltu I 787===3??C=r==MK===>W?===3lJ * persons -wm _ bout it views about death and its relationship to life," acr*nr/4inrr f/> **?i.. VUlUlllg I\J IHWUJf , A psychiatrist who also holds a Master's degree in philosophy, Moody said the most common statement he heard from persons who had gone through this was that no words are adequate to describe the experience. "They just don't make adiectives and superlatives to describe this sort of thing," one informant told him. In describing the "being of light," many poeple identified the light with their own particular regligious experience, he said. Christians u/nnW coo the light as being Christ, and several of these said certain Bible passages came to mind such as "I am the Light." jews said tney thought it was an angel, and atheists saw it only as a being of light. In saying this, however, people said what they actually saw was only a light, inn tney interpreted it as being different things. Moody said. "People with whom I've talked aren't afraid of death anymore. They don't regard death as oblivion." Moody said people do not particularly want to die because of the experience, but that it affected their attitudes about living and the purpose of life "They saw a review of their life and that they should have been learning how tn lnvn nihor 0 ,,V.W,/.V . he said. "As one person put it. 'I've got a lot of changing to do before I leave here.' " Moody said he encourages persons to think of alternative explanations to what these persons said they experienced, because only through proving or disproving that mankind will be able to draw mn. elusions about death. Discussing his own personal reflections, Moody said, "I don't want lo be regarded as a guru or messenger from beyond. I think the guru role is a very depressing one." He said he firmly believes now that there is an afterlife, and "now that I hi?ve resolved the question 1 want to go on living as tree from that question as possible."
