F e minis t By Merry Balmi> What can three women do who want to use their energies for the benefit and service of women in Columbia and South Carolina? It's very simple. They pool their resources, rent a house and open a feminist bookstore. Fran Chester, Pat Callair and Tootsie Holland leased part of a house, painted it, built bookshelves and decided upon the name: The Sojourner Bookstore and Craftshop. The name comes from Snimirapr Truth a IQfh rpnturv women's rights activist. Having opened in the summer, the store is at last a reality for Fran Chester who developed the idea. "I've always wanted a bookstore, l ve always been an activist," Chester said. "With my interests I saw the time was right to open a feminist bookstore in Columbia." The Sojourner is a first for Smith Carolina. According to the three owners, it is the only feminist bookstore between Tallahasee, Fla.,and Washington, D.C. "Feminists are people committed to the goals of equality for women," Callair said. "They strive to do away with stereotypes." "We are feminists who see an ?..*!?? n... *1? ~r ? uuuci iui uui iucaa in uic wdy ui a bookstore. I think this store has great potential all over the state.
