IFC clarifies vie on yearbook To the Editor: Congratulations on j Fohriiarv fi priitnrial "Voarl vs. Organization"; we thusiastically endorse Gamecock's "Pro-Con" appn to covering this issue. The purpose of this letter is n criticize any person or ar dealing with the Yearbo< Organizations issue, nor is i attack on the 1976 Garnet & B! The purpose is to set the re straight on some of the mi; ceotions dealing with Greeks appeared in Gamecock arti Contrary to previous arti< group pictures of Greeks, i with other organizations, arc the issue (although we are interested in retaining them), issue is-the limited coverage c Greeks; why the cut from 32 p in the 1975 Garnet and Black pages this year? Further] there has been no reassurance the coverage will not be cut more next year. It seems very unlikely thai organization would want Garnet and Black to consist of after page of pictures. As is al the case, a statement has misunderstood, exaggerate extremes and told over and until it's stomped in the grc the funny thing about it is, nc said it in the first Dlace. All w is for a suitable balance bet pictures and copy. We do not to change the format of yearbook (the coverage in '7' '75 was excellent)! Bob Baker, Editor-in-Chief < 1976 Garnet and Black, ir i ! It w cles. said that "Mr. Fowler - seemed ;les- have missed the point ' ilong disagreement." Mr. Baker goes i not to say that Inter-Fraterni very Council President, Tony Lowrm The mentioned that he didn't care >f the see group pictures in the yearbo (ages But what he failed to sav in 1 V to 16 letter was that Lowman was givi more his personal opinion and was 1 i that speaking for the entire Gre even system. The editor of the Garnet a ; any Black asserts that organizatic the once deserved coverage when 75 page per cent of the students were ways volved in them. He now feels tl utcu in ii> coverage is no long id to warranted since, as he sees it, oi over 10-15 per cent of the presi mnd; student body is involved body organizations. He has be e ask misinformed. According to I ween Office of Student Activities (a want they should know), a total of 9,the USC students belong to at least c 1 and campus organization. What are some ok. of the reasons for the the cut in he Greek coverage? ng First, a readership survey was lot taken in 1974 and showed that a ;ek majority of the yearbook readers felt that there was too much Greek nd coverage. The truth is-the survey >ns was never valid in the first place. It -80 was done by one person, (Fred in- Merritt, former editor of the lat Garnet and Black). Very few ;er people have seen this sacred nly document. The results of it were ent never tabulated, there was never a in conclusion drawn from it and even en if thp cnrv*?v wac t/alirl iiiKu wv?a f V-J ?TMU ? Mr. les Merritt filed it under garbage, of Second, it has been noted that ire one of the reasons for the "rock ac- bottom" circulation of the Garnet IFE ISTTEE pkQ i ir\ tHo FIF"^ jww tv/ u iv/ | SM TUi it housing n the admhistratic svt lo? /*? /rsbrtlrtk a/m? /use&r 77/6 /pw9? #//&> /v&dr 7?fer a//t? and Black in 1973 was too mu coverage given to organizatior But this is only an assumption; t economy, the quality of tl previous years'annuals or stude apathy may have been the cause the slump. Furthermore, last yej only about 1 out of every 5 studen purchased a Garnet and Black. Also, what abo the friends of these organizatioi who's names don't appear on tl roles? Finally, we agree that Carolii 1975-76 is a unique school year; b the strong support from stude organizations has played a maj< role in its making.
