James Cob Martin the c bare knuckli now playing Jill Ireland Bronso kno( inL By SAM L. IRVIN JR. Gamecock Staff Writer Hard Times is the current Charles Bronson vehicle, and it is his best since Death Wish. In this film, Bronson plays Chaney, a street fighter during the Depression days in New Orleans. He gets involved in illegal prizefighting in which spectators bet money on the outcome. - Chaney is unbeatably strong, but because of his aged appearance, the spectators always bet on the opponent. Bronson plays the character well, giving us the humble, silent treatment; in fact all of his dialogue could probably fit on one sheet of paper. He relies on craggy facial expressions which work surprisingly well. THE REALISM of the characters is sharply nist actress illustrated in one scene when Speed has finished ilm. It is a making love to a prostitute. The girl is obviously a-starring in bored to death. Speed asks, "How was I?" The girl suddenly sparks to life and says "Oh you were really out the cast great!" Speed replies with light disgust, "Somehow I and bruises, knew you would say that." Unlike some of the violence-oriented Bronson films. Hard Times matches the violence with powerful statements about human nature. Because of this, the film is definitely recommended; it is highly potent on two levels.
