Tom Wamser, a freshman, said he was approaching Bates House on the ramp at about 9:10 p.m. when he noticed two blacks standing in front of him. "I sensed there was going to be trouble," Wamser said. One of them approached him, asked for his wallet and pushed him against the fence. Wamser said he would give them the money but he needed the wallet. He was then smashed in the jaw, his wallet grabbed and both of the assailants fled. This was the fifth attack in the Bates area since dormitories opened. Reaction to the latest incident was very similar, more protection is needed, students say. Chopper Kizer, a Bates WHouse resident suggested the possibility of a student auxilary force. "If four or five guys were out on the ramp at one time, they'd think twice about doing anything," Kizer said. Bookstore managers say prices will rise By JOHN ANGILLEY Gamecock Staff Writer The trend toward rising textbook prices will continue, according to the managers of the two local campus bookstores. According to E.A. Bailey, manager of the South Carolina Book Store, and William Rorie, manager of the Campus Book Store, the rising prices reflect the current rate of inflation. Both said the cost of some books will go up within the semester. A COMPARISON of new and used book prices reveals both stores charge virtually the same prices. Both stores also return the same amount of money to students for used books. A student who buys a used book for $7.50 (cost of the book when new $10) will receive $5 when returning the book to either store. Purchasing the $10 boolt new also will return $5. Because professors end departments choose their own books, students may continue to have some difficulty in locating a few texts every semester. Rorie said new instructors are added at the last moment to handle unexpected enrollment in a particular subject and students will not be able to buy their books for a few days. 'Laboratory' set up for would-be writers By ALICE WENNER Gamecock Staff Writer Beginning this week, the USC English Department is sponsoring a "Writing Laboratory to aid students that are having problems in any aspects of writing. Bruce Cantrell, lab director, said it will be available at no cost to Carolina students. Tentatively, the lab will be located in room 216 of the Humanities Office Buiiding, Sunday through Thursday 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and by appointment. Operating on a totally individualized basis, the lab will be completelv flexible to the student's needs, Cantrell said. "A lot of people simply lack confidence in their writing. We will ap proach writing as a skill that can be taught," he said. Cantrell said he is anticipating a. lot of people in the lab. mostly through teacher-referrals. "But we are encouraging self-referral visitations," he said. "A student may come once or as many times as he wants. It's really up to ~he students, but we would like to work with some over an ex'tended >eriod of time to make good writers out of them." NEED A JOB? .
