entertainment About Campus By Chuck Cromer Now that most students have become snug in their academic schedule, a search for diversions ensues. A desire for fantasy, sensuality, comedy, or inebriation overcomes their need for study and cries out in hungry anticipation. Well, with the entertainment schedule that is planned for the next month or so, that hunger could evolve into starvation. Let's face it, the best entertainment we have seen so far this semester is the Board of Trustees trying to get our University's accredidation suspended. Fortunately, there are exceptions. Comedy appears to be the highlight of this week's agenda, as two absurd video movies and a rock comedian are featured. The Mexican Connection and Reefer Madness will be shown on video television from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyday this week (except Thursday) in the Russell House Art Gallery and from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the Golden Spur by the University Union Student Television Committee. All showings are free to USC students. Reefer Madness was made in 1936, at a time when the U.S. government was pushing an elaborate campaign to make marijuana illegal. Hopeless addicts smoke grass so strong that they get high just by blowing billows of thick smoke (they don't seem to inhale) and after 'a couple of puffs they run around like crazed speed freaks on a terrible bender. "Reefer Madness is Hollywood's answer to the marijuana problem," says a 1938 Look Magazine review. "The new movie exposes one method of selling marijuana cigarets to high school students and appraises the crime, debauchery and tragedy caused by smoking them. "Sensual dancing and marijuana smoking make a weakling of Bill. Before realizing what he is doing, he becomes an addict of the habit-forming drug. He craves its strange, stimulating effect. Blanche commits suicide, Ralph is adjudged hopelessly insane, while Bill's life is wrecked." Contemporary comedians have always been popular at USC. Kenny Kramer should continue that trend.
