Anneewa 'Land Of' BY BRENDA BELL Entertainment Editor With just 13 lys and a few tents, a portion of Bell Camp has been transformed into a "land of friendly people" since July 16. The camp, part of a six-to-eight week summer project for emotionally disturbed boys, is sponsored by the Anneewakee Foundation of Douglasville, Ga. The Anneewakee (Cherokee term meaning "land of the friendly people") Foundation is a resident treatment center for 125 emotionally disturbed boys bet ween the ages of 8 and 18 who also Workshoj Sexual Pr BY BILL HOGUE of The Gamecock staff With an eye toward increasing the sexual responsiveness of women who have difficulty achieving orgasms or who are non orgasmic, the Psychological Services Center at USC will offer an extensive program of sexual enrichment for women this August. Wayne M. Sotile, a third year doctoral candidate in clinical psychology, has planned the program under the close sdper vision of Dr. Peter R. Kilmann of the Psychology Department. "Treatment will involve at tendance at 15, one-hour sessions geared toward the reduction of sexual anxiety," Sotile said. "Sexual anxiety can refer to a number of specific problem areas, but, broadly speaking, I am talking about general uneasiness during sexual relations which interferes with the ability to relax and enjoy sexual stimulation. "Various research efforts in dicate that anywhere from 15 to 80 per cent of women in our society suffer from orgasmic dysfunction. It's a very common problem and there is a tremendous need for more information in this area," Sotile said. Sotile explained some of the difficulties encountered In working toward sexual enrichment. "There is a good deal of sexual misin formation today even though more accurate information Is available than ever before," Sotile said. "A good deal of this misin formation and the attendanL problems may have come about because of religious, societal, or parental pressure which sometimes makes sex a forbidden topic of discussion. These taboos are really unfortunate because sexual problems are almost always treatable," he said. Sotile stresses that the female sexual enrichment group is not a new concept and has been used successfully in similar private and public institutional settings throughout the nation.. "The kee--mBell rhe Frien( rank in the upper 20 per cent of the nation in IQ. Their emotional problems are behavioral problems--depression, anxiety, tension, and drug problems - not severe mental problems. None of the boys who live at the center are required to live behind walls or fences because of their emotional problems, but are allowed to live freely in an open environment. With a full staff of social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and nurses, at the main campus, the therapy there is to stay involved in different things. The boys are taught to be as self Studies oblems treatment techniques we employ have been ehlpful to women in other situations and we believe that there is a need for this service in South Carolina," he said. Sotile said USC's program is unique in that it is free of charge and is open to anyone, not just members of the Carolina Com munity. Also, anyone who feels the need to receive further counseling at the end of the 15 group sessions will be offered help by the Psychological Services Center "We will also adhere to the strictest ethical and professional standards during this research. All information will be held in confidence and any questionnaires to be filled out will be labeled only with a code number -- no names will be attached to written material. At no time will anyone be asked to reveal details of her private life to the group," he said. When asked about the role of the female's spouse or regular sex partner in the group, Sotile replied, "That role will be limited to an swering questionnaires at home and returning them to me by mail. This will serve to supplement my research data. I've found that difficult problems often arise when you try to work with couples. I feel that working with one partner can be very effective. However, if unusual difficulties arise I won't hesitate to make a referral for some other form of therapy." Sotile plans to begin the group in late August and encourages anyone who is interested to call him soon. "The group will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis with a limited number of spaces available. Anyone who is in terested should contact me at the USC Psychological Services Center," he said. "I have high expectations for this program and I hope women who are dissatisfied with their orgasmic response will get in volved. I suspect that there are a large number of people who are missing out on a very fulfilling and satisfying part of their lives because of sexual anxiety Camp ily People sufficient as they can be. Each summer the boys are divided into nine groups to decide where to take their six-to-eight week summer trip away from the center. The boys may choose anywhere they wish to go and they must plan every detail of the trip. The Dakanda (each of the groups has an Indian name) group will be at Bell Camp until August 5. They will then travel to Santee, to Myrtle Beach and then back to Bell Camp in two weeks. A recent USC graduate, Chris Hickman, is serving as counselor of the Dakanda group. Hickman had worked at Bell Camp for three years while he was in school and knew that the area would be a good place for a summer outing for the boys. While at Bell Camp, the boys are living in tents down by the lake. For breakfast, they might have egg-toast made by cutting a hole in the center of a slice of bread, breaking an egg into it, and frying it. They also might make their own unique banana split. First, they get a banana and split it length wise, then they put bits of a chocolate bar into the split and top it with marshmallow, and finally wrap it all in foil and heat it. The group attends church every Sunday. On their first Sunday in Columbia they attended a local baptist church and went to a restaurant for lunch.
