Starring Gene Hackman, Allen Garfield, John Cazale and Federic Forrest. The movie has a theme of eavesdropping and wiretapping, but it focuses on the life of an ''electronic surveillance technician" rather than victims. A sheer thriller, a psychological study, a social analysis and a political comment. Gene Hack man, the best bugger in the West, is protective of his own privacy. During an assignment (uncovering of possible adultery) he became involved in a situation against his will in which he uncovers a recurrent guilt paranoia that NAI COLUMBIA AU( FEATURIN RUSS THE NOOKi BROS. However, the movie is worthwhile and entertaining in its own right. The film begins, appropriately, where "Funny Girl" left off, that is, after Fanny Brice is divorced from the dashing gambler,Nick Arnstein. As the title suggests, the majoil theme of the film is the transistion of Fanny Brice from the girlish Zeigfeld star of "Funny Girl" to the worldly , businesslike entertainer. The final resolution of her near life-long obession witth Nick Arn stein(Omar Sharif) and the history of her romance with Billy Rose(James Caan) compose the bulk of the plot. While the ending is somewhat ambiguous, it is much more optimistic than that of "Funny Girl." The viewer now believes that Fanny Brice has finally matured and is capable of making it on her own, with no help from either Arnstein or Rose. The musical score (done by Marvin Hamlisch), while not ap proaching the time-tested quality of "Funny Girl's", is sufficient. Of course, done by Streisand, any score would be a success. The sets and the costumes are extremely effective and im pressive. The acting :,, the fill- is more amnle. Alth4-.,!- Streisand is not the hottest actress to hit the silver screen. She is , of course, the perfect choice for this role, and her voice certainly compensates for any flaws in her performance. James Caan, in one of his better performances to date. is v-1 cast as the somewhat inexperienced and uncultured entrepreneur, Billy Rose. Still, however, Omar Shariff seems slightly inappropriate choice as N ick Arnstein. Although he has the refined good looks and audience appeal for the part, Sharif's interpretation somehow lacks the warmth, charisma, and happy go lucky nature one would expect from Arnstein. Further more, Sharif comes across as being stable and settled, unlike the impetuous Nick Arnstein as he is written tin the original play. RoddyMcDowell, in the role of Brice's male secretary does a solid job-- nothing exceptional. All in all, the the film is well worth seeing-- one of the better ones to come to Columbia this summer. The acting is good, the plot, adequate, and many of the musical numbers provide a sort of Busby Berkeley escapism-- a sure sucess formula for present day films. rices In-store Service oackage with everything reproduction.
