The opinions expressed hereim de rt necessarily represent those of the University, the student body or all the staff oefbers of the GAMECOCK. Dodging Sprin klers For months, while Gibbes Green was being grassed, mounded, planted and bricked into the eighth wonder of the USC campus, students were forced to scurry from class to class like a bunch of rats in a maze stumbling into one dead end after another. Then it was over. Brunton's mud puddle was again called Gibbes Green. The last of those mysterious mounds had been covered with shipped-in squares of grass and all the dead ends had been removed. One of the most controversial and surely one of the most annoying pieces of construction on this campus was finally complete. Students sighed with relief. We thought that now maybe we could stroll to our classes or lounge on the grassy mounds reading or sleeping, without falling into a hole or being showered by the sandblaster. Boy, were we wrong. Believe it or not, folks, they're at it again. Someone, it seems, has devised a new maze for us rats. But now, instead of dodging mud holes, we are dodging water sprinklers. Sprinklers which seemed to be aimed more on the brick walkways than the grass. Grass needs a lot of water sure, but there is no need to dump so much of it on the walk ways (not to mention us rats). By allowing the sprinklers to douse the walkways they are forcing the students to cross the Green on the grass in places that are out of range of the sprinklers. Now, one of the main objectives of constructing the Green in the first place was to keep everybody off the grass. Wasn't it? With a very small amount of effort this situation can be remedied. Those sprinklers are capable of being adjusted so they come up to the edge of the walkways then reverse course and head back. Why isn't this being done? The answer is apathy. This lack of caring isn't anything new around USC. In fact, the important issue here is that this short-sighted sprinkling isn't "just one of those things," it is a manifestation of an underlying ideology which has permeated our Administration. This sprinkler incident, like many other screw-ups around USC, just aren't unfortunate accidents. They are the direct consequence of a developing (almost fourishing) philosophy of those in power at USC. This philosophy can be detected in quotes such as: "I'm personally not really concerned about apathy at all." or "Well, to tell you the truth, I haven't really got much interest in young people." These are quotes from President William H. Pat terson. He is the one person around here who is supposed to be the most concerned with apathy and the one most interested in young people. And yet he himself is apathetic about apathy and young people. In our opinion, this is a philosophy which must be changed at once. How is any USC administrator or dean supposed to care about bettering USC or providing a more quality educational system when the man at the top doesn't seem to? How is that person who turns on those sprinklers supposed to care about whether he is inconveniencing and unnecessarily hassling people if those above him don't care? And finally, how are students supposed to care about anything when all around them they see such a lack of caring? TO THE EDITOR: As a new employee of the University. I enjoy the Gamecock immensely. It gives me insight into phases of University life which I might not otherwise have. I was especially interested in the series on handicapped persons at USC. I sincerely hope the University will continue to adapt its facilities to accommodate these worthy people who are trying to further their education, or perhaps handicapped faculty members as well. It was my great good fortune once to work for a handicapped attorney (in another state). Though his disability was great, he was a brilliant man and had a keen sense of humor and dry wit which made it a pleasure both to know and work with him. I often think what a loss it might have been if someone along the way had not given him a helping hand. His physical handicap did not impair his mental capabilities. I will watch future efforts of USC to help these deserving persons, and applaud those efforts wholeheartedly. LAKEY B. CRISP Housing Office Secretary Food Service Defended TO THE EDITOR: I read last week's article on the ARA food services with great in terest and disappointment. Having been associated with Carolina for many years, over a decade, I can honestly say that the food service has improved. The cost of preparing food for several thousand people every day is no easy task and also, it is not an inexpensive one. The costs of the meals here are below that of other places in Columbia and are in line with those of other schools. The staff in the cafeteria has managed to maintain good quality food and at the same time the quantity is ample. Seems like when all is at rest on the University campus, someone pounces on the food service. I must say - without cause. We always have a good selection of entrees and vegetables, which are alyvays wll prepared. In dealing with people over the past several years, I have found that the people who areac-o knew water fights could be so much fu To The customed to having the least, complain the most. JIM LAMB Pool Regulations Questioned TO THE EDITOR We of the University are proud to announce the opening of Natatorium on campus here, located inside the cinder blocks and away from the recently harm ful effects of sunlight and fresh air and the annoying people of Columbia. The Natatorium, I must say at the outset, like all Univer sity Functions, is not intended to make money; it is of absolutely no profit to its administrators or its participants, or most of all, their non-University. guests. Here are the rules for Natatorium: Natatorium Suits: These are available and recommended before you proceed to the hygiene room where a University official is hired at certain times of the day, the times varying, to employ a Flit gun upon all entrants, male, female, or either, for sanitary purposes. Freshmen and rugby players must unfortunately pass through the Dip on the way to the pool--this being required by our State advisors. Natatorium swim suits are of acceptable hygenic standards and regulation size and weight and must be worn at all times, in or out of the pool but not on the way back and to from Natatorium, as people tend to talk. Personal Swim Suits: These are not recommended, because they might not conceal items which Natorium regards as strange and unlikely, such as navels. Wearers are asked to beware of low-waisted and high-hipped bikinis and tiny bras and such: neither they nor their suits will ever be admitted. Such wearers may be castigated publicly and then required to remote their offensive garments, either with the Flit guni or in dependently, in the hygiene room, in favor of the more acceptable Natatorium suits. Pool Admission: This is granted of course to anybody who would wear a Natatorium SuIt. Otherwise, after inspection of Personal suits, proceed to obtain your wrist-ankle ID band and-or your stainless steel ear clamp, none of which must ever be thrust pell mell into your suit and consequently hidden, but rather displayed on a bare area of your body; locating such an area is the wearer's respnsnibiity, a.,d problem. ' m' ias es 0111 Wil Q11 P1 JA 11 G*ne Hood Editor problem. Street clothes: These may of course be worn in Columbia, but never in Natatorium, as the University regards such clothing as highly improper and offensive for co-educational swimming. Hygiene Room: This is provided free of charge for Natatorium guests who are determined to bring their own hygienes. or else feel diffident at the prospect of wearing Natatorium Suits which everybody and his brother has already put his body into. No one is allowed out side the hygiene room for any purpose. Family membership: Faculty, staff and students are allowed in Natatorium Mon.-Thurs., and Mon Fri. and Sat. and Sun. at different times for each, such as 11:30-1:30, 5-9, 1-5, 5-8, but their dependents, if family (and if wearing Natatorium Suits) are allowed Mon.-Thurs., not Fri., but Sat. & Sun. at different times, 7-9, 1-5, 5-8. If a dependent is of a faculty, staff or student family, then times must be found in the schedule which overlap but do not coincide with each other, as confusion could result. All times above, incidentally, are either a.m. or p.m. Guests: These are allowed at $1.00 per person, per swim. As heavy swimming could be necessarily expensive to the guest (a real good swimmer could rack up 90 or 100 dollars or more per outing), Natatorium recommends Selective Wading be engaged in. All guests must be at least of college age and act a lot older, or else they will be asked to surrender their Natatorium Suits and be sent outside in the sunlight to Maxcy Gregg pool. This requirement is waived in the event the guest is a dependent or can fit himself into the schedule above, or both. But not neither; the University is adamant in its refusal of underage transients and Columbia kids. It will not tolerate confusion of any sort, shape or form in Natatorium, especially in the pool area. It wishes all who go there to have a good time. NAME WITHHELD BY REQUEST ED.--The Natatorium, of course, Is the University's new swimming pool. We of the Gamecock consider some of the policies to be enforced outrageous and dIscrIminatory. It's doubtful that many will really know just what is hygenic or regulatory. Just how will a flit gun he nud?
