Do you foresee the development of any others and the possibility of USC's becoming a senior in stitution? A. Regional campuses are beginning to teach more and more journalism programs. Spar tanburg and Conway are teaching lots of courses now and might eventually develop their own journalism programs. There is a need for getting these courses out to people working now. However, it would be a mistake to get another journalism school for the state. Q. To what do you attribute the fantastic growth of the College? A. I attribute it to nationwide trends in increasing journalism staffs. There are two trends today in the business. With the economy like it is, a student should not restrict himself too much since he never knows exactly what kind of job he will get. Q. Can you foresee the USC College of Journalism ever gaining the national prominence of such schools as Columbia, Minnesota, Northwestern, or Missouri? A. We think we're in the top 10 or 12 of the 62 journalism schools in the nation. I think our reputation hasn't caught up with the quality of our school. We have stolen two of Missouri's best teachers, Dr. Price and Mr. Lanfranco, and all of our people here have high academic and professional ac complishments. Q. Is this move toward national recognition evolutionary or is it a result of having certain people who are showing the enthusiasm and initiative t0 move ahead? A. I think it is a matter of the staff we've brought in. We spend a lot of time and effort recruiting people. We don't just recruit those who have the academic qualifications merited by a Ph.D. We recruit those people with outstanding experience who are also academicians and who are ready to relate their experiences to students. Q. Do you have any personal dreams for the College of Jour nalism? A. We would like to become one of the best schools in the country: I'd like to get in the top five. I think that is within reach in two to five years. If we could get a couple hundred thousand dollars for the next couple of years, we would have a greater chance to enrich REC) YOUR NEV Drop Your Oh Off At TI House P sponsor society for a bei I S R PAY FILMS z.Zms are showon att 015 on Wed., & some times Fri. azt 7:00 & 9:30. o'n izs only $1.00. Yr We are one of the first schools At USC to have student advisory committees in which students participate in curriculum selection and other decisions. Because of this student input we feel we have been able to relate our programs to the individual desires of students. After all, it's their education we're interested in.
