Spring football starting Ineups Carolina head football coach Jim. Carlen has an nounced the probable starting lineups for the annual spring game at Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday night at-7:30 p.m. Carlen also revealed that he would observe the game from the press box, while offensive coordinator Jack Fligg would direct the Garnet squad and defensive coordinator Richard Bell will be in charge of the White team. The Garnet offensive unit will be quarterbacked by Ron Bass of Camp Springs, Md., with Casper Carter of Cayce at tailback and Kevin Long of Clinton at fullback. Randy Chastain of FranklinN.C., will be at flanker. Steve Stephens of Wilmington, N.C., will start at split end; Columbia's Stan James, offensive left tackle; Judge Porter of Fort Worth, Tex., left guard; Mike McCabe of Knoxville, Tenn., center; Greg Shope, Camp Hill, Pa., right guard; Jerone Provence, Savannah, Ga., right tackle; and Jay Saldi of White Plains, N.Y., at tight end. The starting defensive lineup for the Garnet team will, include: Columbia's Larry Frierson at left end; Joe McGregor of Charleston at left tackle; Bubba Shugart of West- Union at middle guard; Joe Smith of Mc Sherrytown, Pa., at right tackle; and Russ Manzari of White Marsh, Md., at right end. The left linebacker will be John Green of Carnegie, Pa., with Ricky Payne of Conyers, Ga., at right linebacker. Mike Tisdale of Kingstree will start at left cornerback, Lance Garrett of Fayetteville, N.C., will be at right cornerback, Andy Nelson of Glen Arm, Md., at strong safety, and Columbia's Hugh Bell at free safety. The White's squad offensive alignment will have Phillip Logan of Richmond, Va., at split end; E.Z. Smith of Concord, N.C., at left tackle; Brad Kline of Washington, D.C., at left guard; Tami Tarbush of Congyers, Ga., at center; Steve Courson of Gettysburg, Pa., at right guard; Mike Fralic of Penn Hills, Pa., at right tackle; and Brian Nemeth of Clearwater, Fla, at right end. The White team's backfield will have Randy Martz of Upper Dauphin, Pa., at quarterback; Clarence Wiulliams of Oakley at Tailback; Tom Amrein of Bel Air, Md., at fullback; and Scott Thomas of Camp Hill, Pa., at tight end. Quarterback Jeff Grantz of Bel Air, Md., will also not play in the spring game due to his participation with Carolina's baseball team. Aiding Fligg with the Garnet team will be assistants Dick Rader, Bob Brown, Dale Evans, Jerry Sullivan and graduate assistant Eddie Muldrow. Assisting Bell with the White squad will be. Bob Gatling, Larry New, Marc Dove, Dennis Ford and Harold White. Tickets for the spring game are $2. for students and $3 for adults, while Carolina students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with identification cards. Garry Hancoci Hancock, Gamecoci BY PETE FEHELEY Sports Editor a The Gamecock baseball team rebounded from their first home loss of the season to Davidson by defeating Baptist College of Charleston, 6-2, Wednesday af ternoon at the Rex Enright Field. Ray Lavigne, 8-0, tossed a six hitter against the Buccaneers as he struck out nine batters while walking only two. The Gamecocks took advantage of Baptist starter Ronnie Miles control problems as he walked eight. Carolina got 11 hits off Miles with Garry Hancock getting three. NBC features Richardson Carolina's fifth-ranked Gamecocks and coach Bobby Richardson will be featured on the NBC-TV program "The Basball World of Joe Garagiola." A crew from NBC-TV was in Statesboro, Ga., last weekend to film the Gamecocks as they played a three game series against Georgia Southern. Producer Don Ellis said the footage was for an upcoming episode of The Baseball World of Joe Garaglola", which precedes the Monday night television game of the week. Ellis said the show will feature ex-major league players who now coach college teams and will be aimed at determing why they turned to college coaching rather than a managing career in professional baseball. Richardson was one of the major league's top second baseman during an 11 year career with the New York Yankees . Th show is expected to feature two other former Ysnkee players, coach Bud Mstheny of Old Dominion and Gil McDougald of Fordham Univer sity. Ellis said the tentative date for airing the show waa June 9. Je Lavigne b4 cs past Bai Hank Small and Steve Cook had two hits each for USC. One of Cook's hits was a bases loaded single that brought home two Gamecock runs. The victory brought Carolina's season mark to 34-4 with nine regular season games left on the schedule. It was also Lavigne's first complete game since his April 7 win against The Citadel. In the loss to Davidson Tuesday, the Gamecocks wasted numerous scoring opportunities in stranding 10 baserunners, three in the eighth and two in the ninth inning. The 4-3 defeat came. in spite of three Davidson errors and 13 Gamecock hits. Starter Mike Cromer, 0-2, took the loss as he allowed all fotir Wildcat runs on six hits. Cromer was touched for a two-run homer by the NCAA's leading hitter, George Weicher. Chuck McLean came on in relief of Cromer in the sixth and finished the game for Carolina. One bright spot in the loss was the hitting of Jeff Grantz, who has been in a month long batting Eagles here Bass to star A weekend two-game rematch with contender Georgia Southern highlights the last full week of basebali for South Carolina's fifth ranked Gamecocks before a break for final examinations as the Gamecocks, wvith a record of 34-3, bid for a second straight NCAA playoff berth. A 7:30 p.m. with Furman on Thursday precedes the weekend series.with Georgia Southern. Tim Lewis will pitch the Furman game while Earl Bass will open against Georgia Southern in a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday. Hank Small also had three hits for the Gamecocks. Carolina won both ends of a doubleheader on Monday behind the pitching of Greg Ward and Earl Bass. Ward tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener in beating Wofford, 5-0. Bass then followed with a five-hit 2-0 blanking of Newberry College. Ward, 9-2, struck out 11 Wofford hitters in the opener. He did not walk a batter in gaining his 29th career win as a Gamecock. Garry Hancock and Steve King provided most of the offense with four hits each. King drove in two runs while Hancock, Grantz and Jim Pankovits all had one RBI. In the nightcap, Bass picked up his 10th win of the year against no defeats. Bass also fanned 11 Newberry hitters. Carolina managed only six hits off Indian starter Ronnie Crocker. Grantz drove Pankovits home with a long sacrifice fly to left and Jamie Chakales scored on David Small's groundout. Friday ; -t opener The Gamecocks travel to Charleston Mronday night to meet Southern Conference leader, The Citadel, before breaking 11 days for exams. Action resumes May 8 when South Carolina travels to Furman before returning home May 9-10 against Jacksonville. The Gamecocks, If they receive an NCAA bid, will reassemble May 19 after a nine-day break, and will go to Atlanta May 20 to make up a doubleheader with Georgia Tech that was called earlier due to wet grounds.
