Pat Henry, Sandi Shackelfo make up three members of the will be touring the campu Renaissance flavor during the Renaissanc salutes Mic University and community residents can take a quick trip back to the days and lifestyles of the 15th and 16th centuries during the coming week when the University of South Carolina celebrates its third annual Renaissance Festival. Sponsored by the College of Arts and Letters, the University Players and the departments of art, English, foreign languages, music, religion, and theatre and speech, the festival continues the Renaissance tradition by bringing a cultural outburst to the USC campus. The festival will run through Saturday, April 26. This year the festival is saluting Michelangelo, who was born 500 years ago this spring. Several activities during the week are centered around this artist. These include a program of Renaissance music and art at 4 p.m. April 20 in Fraser Hall; a public symposium conducted by four professors from various academic areas, entitled "Michelangelo and his Times" at 8:15 p.m. April 21 in Sloan College and "Michelangelo, The Man and His Art," four short papers which will be presented at 8:15 p.m. April 22 in Sloan College. Also on Monday Dr. Carol Carlisle, of the English department will give a public lecture on "Love's Labor's Lost and its Renaissance." Dr. Herbert Matsen of the philosophy department will present a lecture entitled "Alessandro Achellini (1463-1512) and Ockhamism at Bologna." The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in the nursing building William Shakespeare's "Love Labor's Lost" will be presented April 23-26 by the Department of Theatre and Speech. ' The play begins nightly at 8:15 and is being staged in the Drayton Hall Theatre. In addition to these scheduled events, various displays and exhibits will be available for view throughout the week. "The Story of a Faded Image," an exhibit of Renaissance art, will be on display through April 30 in the Humanities classroom building. Featured in the exhibit is a badly damaged but once hand some portrait of a Spanish nobleman. Also on display in the Humanities building is a small exhibition of minor arts including renaissance books, illuminations, prints and pottery. A display of the rare volumes from the 15th and 16th centuries in the collection of the USC libraries will be in the Rare Book room of McKissick library.
