Spring pr BY MARK LEARY Asat. Sports Editor The second football scrimmage of the spring season was held Saturday and according to head coach Jim Carlen it could best be described as a "teaching session." Carlen said, "Spring practice scrimmages are teaching sessions, The reason for this is that we arn teaching the players we - havt moved to different positions and also there are still chances ol moving other people to different positions." Many things stood out to the 150( people who watched the new hea( coach's scrimmage. People sam not only the attitude of the tearr but also they noticed the differen way Carlen runs his practice and i1 was painfully evident that two vita players were missing. The attitude of the team wa very impressive to say the least. Enthusiasm and hard-hitting wa the rule rather than the exception, The enthusiasm of the players an also the coaching staff stood ou the moss though. Three units c offense and defense paired o against each other and while th players were waiting for their tur to get into combat they wer cheering for the unit'that was ot on the V!eld. Carlen coached in a manner thi was new to most Carolina fans Carlen, dressed in his strei clothes, stepped back and took i overview of the practice as h coaches instructed the players the pits. Carlen said, "I let my assistai coaches coach the players. Sometimes if you both ai iactice .. coaching, two different things might be told to the same player and then there would be problems." Carlen added, "I coach penalties, fumbles and mistakes." The Gamecock's two quar terbacks, Ron Bass and Jeff Grantz, both missed the scrim mage. Bass suited up, but did not play because of an injury. Carlen said the inj wy might need surgery by the end of the spring season. I Jeff Grantz also watched for a while and talked to his teammates t before leaving. When Grant: left he was heading for the baseball diamond where at this point in the year he owes his allegiance to I Bobby Richardson and the r baseball Gamecocks. i Carlen called the quarterbacking t situation the "two biggest ifs" of t the up-coming football season. I Carlen said, "I am pleased with both quarterbacks. It is Just a matter of time to see what happens s as Grantz could possibly go into pro baseball after this year if the s contract is right and Bass has to be healthy." I Carlen feels that team depth is t the biggest problem of this year's if squad. Carlen said that he just i does not have enough reserve e strength. n The -freshmen rule will be an e important plus for the Gamecocks it to take care of some of the depth problems. Carlen said, "I am not for the freshmen rule per say, but it in the case of Carolina it will help us." Carlen believes through his at experience at Texas Tech that a in freshman isn't ready to play until is mid-season. in The Gamecocks will have another scrimuMage this Saturday rit at 10 a.m. and all spectators are encouraged to come and see the e team la A* sports ude - C.wl s"" y V, 5. 1
