Black gro represent BY DEBBIE HOWARD Of The Gamecock staff Daniel McRae and blaris DesChamps, the newly-elected Mr. and Miss Black USC, agreed the most important function of these titles was "to provide represen tatives from the Afro-American Association for the Carolina Community." Black students voted on a number of students running for the title to determine the five male and five female contesta'nts for the Mr. and Miss Black USC pageant. Seven contestants, three males and four females competed in two categories, talent and questions, at the pageant. Judges made the final decision. DesChamps, a sophomore Office Administration major, is an Alpha Kappa Alpha pledge and has just been elected Secretary of the USC Afro-American Association. "I feel that we can represent the Afro-American Association by hosting visitors for special events here on campus, and by accepting any offers to aid in any capacity for programs in the Carolina Com munity," DesChamps said. McRae a senior French major is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and the Afro-American Association. When asked, "What would your objectives be if elec ted?" at the pagennt, McRae said, "I would encourage more par ticipation in the Afro-American Association and try to help the Carolina Community through fraternity sponsored projects in Journey to study tropical ecology Columbia College officials are offering USC students an op portur.ity to take part in a travel study course in tropical island ecology May 7 through 21 at Andros Island, Bahamas. The two-week course, which can be taken by students either for academic credit, will cost between $310 and $400 per student, including travel. C. Congressman W. J. Bryan Dorn will formally present his Congressional papers and memorabilia to USC April 9. The Dorn papers, estimated to contain 125,000 items, are one of the largest collections ever received by the University's South Caroliniana Library. A presentation ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. at South Caroliniana Library. The Dorn papers contain general correspondence, legislation Dorn was involved in, newsletters, and speech and subject files. Dr. Ennis Rees, USC English professor, will receive the Euphradian Literary Society's bi-annual award for Distinction in Literature on Thursday April 10. The Euphradian Literary Society, the nation's oldest collegiate literary society, has chosen Rees for their poetry honorarium because of his contributions to the literary standing on the state of South Carolina.
