The Faculty Manual lists teaching responsibilities as the formal statement of policy. Formerly considered an unwritten contract, the list was deemed necessary by the University. The responsibility most relevant to the requiring of a professor to issue a syllabus was as follows: "Instructural staff members are responsible for stating clearly the instructional objectives of each course they teach at the beginning of each term. It is expected each instructional staff member will direct his instruction toward the fulfillment of these objectives and that examinations will be con sistent with these objectives. Instructional staff members are responsible to orient the content of the courses they are.assigned to teach to the course descriptions approved by the Committee on Curricula and New Courses and the University Catalog." The University conceives these to be so important that the per formance of the instructional staff in meeting the provisions of this code shall be taken into con sideration in determining salary increases, tenure and promotion, according to the manual. The committee has proposed an addition to be added to the second statement: "At the request of the student, faculty members should make available periodic in formation and-or an evaluation of the student's progress in the course of the semester." "I do feel that the students should know about the evaluation system of the professor," said co chairman of the committee Dr. John Carpenter. He also agreed a professor should give out a syllabus at the start of the term. "We're trying to protest the right of the student to get out before he gets in over his head. In terms of letting the student know if he meets the professor's idea of competency, the committee proposed a satisfactory unsatisfactory listing. The list, which would be posed before the drop date, would include the names of students not meeting up to their professor's itandards.
