Ranked Bulk drop netmen, BY BETSY WILCOX Of The Gamecock staff In men's tennis action Tuesday, the Gamecocks dropped the match to a nationally-ranked Georgia team, 6-3. It was USC's second loss in seventeen outings, putting their record at 13-2, with two can cellations. The Gamecocks took two single's matches, with the number two player, Jeff Kefalos, defeating Fordon Smith, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. Fresh man Jeff Huff defeated Rickey Diaz, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Carolina's number one player Clyde Skaflestad was defeated by Manuel Diaz, 6-4, 7-5. In the double's competition USC's team of Geller and Dukes downed that of Van Dohlen and Delaney, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, for Carolina's only other win against Georgia. Georgia's double's team of Diaz and Smith downed Skaflestad and Hufschmid 6-3, 7-6, while USC's Jeff Kefalos and Jeff Hull fell to David Dick and Joe Gettys, 6-1, 6-1. In tennis action on the road, the Gamecocks won eight of eight, defeating some top-ranked teams, beginning with Jacksonville, who went down 6-3, to the Carolina visitors. USC then took on Florida State in what was termed by Coach Smarr," a surprising match." Florida had previously defeated Duke, 7-2, while the Gamecocks had fallen to the Blue Devils, 5-4. The Gamecocks pulled out a 5-4 win over Florida State, with the number two player, Jeff Kefalos, downing an undefeated Cleve Rothwell, making Kefalos un defeated in singles. It was also the first time USC had defeated Florida State. Carolina also defeated the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, 5-4. USC's Andreas Hufschmid downed Tony Webb 6-0, 6-2 and Jeff Kefalos defeated Park Lockrow 6-3, 6-4. Phil Dukes put down Rob Castorrie 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 and Jeff Hull defeated Gary McIntyre, 6-1, 6-1. Carolina's only double's win was the team of Dukes and Geller over Bermal and Adam, 6-1, 6-4, to clinch the match. "I'm very proud of my team," said Coach Smarr. "It was the first time we had played on clay ccourts this year, and I'm proud of them. That game could have gone either way," he said. USC also defeated So. Alabama, 8-1, Tulane, 7-2, So. Mississippi, 9-0, Mississippi, 8-1, Memphis State, 6 3, with the LSU match rained out. "I'm real pleased with the team record. Jeff Kefalos is 15-0 in singles, and freshman Jeff Hull is 13-2. He has improved the most in thinking on the court," Smarr said. Smarr also said, "There are some who could improve. Clyde Skaflestad has lost a couple of close matches and his record Is 9-6, with Andreas Hufschmid at 10-5." Over all Coach Smarr feels that he has great talent. "I could take my first four players, Skaflestad, Kefalos, Hufschmid and Dukes and play them any where. They are that good. But I don't believe in stacking to win. Western Kentucky does it and we don't play them any more," Smarr said. Coach Smarr feels that the double's team of Steve Geller and Phil Dukes is one of the best. "They give It their all. Against Georgia they never gave up. Even logs 6-3 though the match was lost, they kept on trying and pulled out a tough win. That is a sign of fight. Their record ,is now 13-2," Smarr said. "Out of the next twelve matches, eight of them will be tough, really tough," Smarr commented. "We play Ohio State Saturday, here. Basketball The Gamecocks basketball season mercifully came to an end ii Madison Square Garden' at the hands of Princeton in the quar terfinals of the NIT 86-67 last Thursday. Carolina's loss 'meant the Gamecocks missed a 20 win season for the first time since the 67-68 season. Carolina has never ad vanced past the second game in any type of post season play, NCAA or NIT. Gymnastics Carolina's women's gymnastics team placed eighth in the AIAW Regional Intercollegiate Gym nastics Meet at Appalachian State on March 14 and 15.
