Chicks un as season BY GEORGE MORRIS Of The Gamecock staff The fact there is an undefeated, untied Carolina athletic team this year, one that proved itself the best in the state in a tournament last week, is probably the best kept secret on campus. Their better performers have such unfamiliar names as Grimm, Robbins, Marshall, Ackerman, Green and Giese. Their coaches' names are almost equally un familiar--Gentry and Wetherhold. What sport is this? Rugby? Soccer? Water Polo? No, it's women's swimming. After dominating their com petition in winning the state championships last week, Carolina finished the year with an 11-0 record. This weekend, two of the swimmers, Nancy Grimm and Cricket Robbins, will compete in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Championships. The girls team is coached by Alan Gentry and Gary Wetherhold. Gentry also coaches the men's team an4 Wetherhold, a former Gamecolk diving standout, coaches the men's diving as well. Gentry is justifiably pleased with the results of this year's team and the improvement in the girl's program as a whole. "The girls did a hell of a job this year, and their competition is not low level by any means," Gentry said. "Last year we had only four meets; this year we had nine dual meets. With the advent of scholarships it will come down to recruiting now," he said. Only one senior, captain Janet Green, will graduate from this year's team, and both Grimm and Robbins are freshmen. Grimm will compete in the 200 and 400 yard freestyle and Robbins will swim in the 200 and 200-yard and individual medley and the 200-yard butterfly. "We stand, a fair chance of placing in the meet. I think most of the winners will be sophomores and juniors coming out of strong AAU programs, though," Gentry said. But no matter how Carolina comes out in the AIAW meet they will have a solid group of swim mers returning next year. Carolina took 10 out of 14 events in the state meet, and all of those winners return. Grimm won three events in the state meet, the 100-, 200- and 400 yard freestyle. Robbins took first place in the 100-yard individual At 1:00 - 3:0 defeated ends Alan Gentry Gary Weatherhold medley, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard butterfly and teamed with B.Z. Giese, Lynne Marshall and Joan Ackerman to win the 200 yard medley relay. Giese and Ackerman finished first and second in the 50-yard backstroke, Marshall and Giese did the same in the 50-yard but terfly and Robbins, Marshall, Giese and Barbara Helfer took the first four places in the 100-yard butterfly. Ackerman also won the 100-yard backstroke and Nancy White took first in the three meter diving. Only one senior, captain Janet Green, will graduate from this year's team, and both Grimm and Robbins are freshmen. Grimm will compete in the 200- and 400 yard freestyle and Robbins will swim in the 100- and 200-yard in dividual medley and the 100-yard butterfly. week 5 -7:15 - 9:25 National Invitat Tournament Dr March 15-23, 1975 ST.
