Provost Keith Davis cited the following criteria for the single department: -National trends and state needs support the development of an independent department. -Anthropology is a separate discipline with a special role to play among the social sciences. -Anthropology has special needs which are best administered by a chairman trained in that specialty. -The University has most of the resources needed for a sound anthropology department and operates as a semi-autonomous unit. The first of the proposals sub mitted to the Board of Trustees last fall showed only three states other than South Carolina did not maintain at least one independent department of anthropology at a publicly supported four year in stitution. South Carolina'b population size and growth and medium family income were cited Positions oi Game cock, Applications for fall rnedia by the Board of Student Public Available positions for "Th4 advertising manager. In the second proposal, the role anthropologists have played in society was outlined. It also showed the increase in bachelors degrees in the field as a major indicator of the growing interest in anthropology. The third proposal called for a chairman for the department. Chosen for the position was Karl Heider from the Stanford University's Advanced Studies of Behavioral Sciences. He will become a member of the depart ment in mid-July. The final proposal calls for the operation of the new department as a semi-autonomous unit. The recent enrollment of about 900 students in fall terms with 100 majors this year sufficiently warrants an independent depart ment, according to the proposal. The Anthropology Department is hoping for a new building, but is not sure when or where one will be created. The ideal place is thought to be next to the Institute of Ar chaeology and Anthropology. However, any change in location would not come for another two years, after the completion of the Behavioral Sciences Center. rz Crucible, radio open positions are being accepted ations and Commuinications. : Gamecock" are editor and The Crucible" is also open. ear, instead of on a semester I WUSC-AM is open. b 31at 5p.m. in Dean Robert the Student Media Office in iewed on Aprii 14. ted ads FOR SALE New Canon F-1, 4 lenses.
